The era of certainty in basic and industrial materials has ended. Companies must prepare to compete amid complexity as industries such as chemicals, metals, mining, paper, and agribusiness adapt to a transformed landscape. Businesses must navigate six influential trends that are set to redefine competitive advantage in the materials industry. 1. Geopolitics – Global tensions create new trade dynamics, influencing supply chains and worldwide market access. 2. Trade Policies – Rising tariffs and ESG regulations impact materials sourcing and value chain configurations. 3. Shifting Demand – Technological advancements and the energy transition reshape demand, favoring certain materials. 4. Supply Shortages – Resource competition intensifies, with tighter supplies and higher costs affecting production. 5. Sustainability – Companies adopting eco-friendly innovations and circular models will lead in this evolving landscape. 6. Changing Workforce – As experienced talent retires, organizations need strategies to attract and retain the next generation. Companies that proactively anticipate, adapt to, and innovate in response to these trends will be the ones to secure their competitive edge in the materials industry. Agriculture already accounts for one-third of global greenhouse gases. And by 2050, food demand will rise by 60%. The solution? Finding ways to unlock private-sector incentives through better measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV). BCG and Food Systems for the Future collaborated on research to propose practical, scalable solutions: 1. Transparent MMRV standards. 2. Farmer-controlled “data wallets.” 3. Open-source climate data. 4. Simplified climate-smart marketplaces. 5. Financial incentives for sustainable practices. The path forward is clear—farmers need support, investment, and actionable frameworks. Public-private collaboration can transform agriculture into a cornerstone of climate resilience. The road to net zero grows more complex, shaped by a shifting geopolitical landscape and multipolar competition. National interests, economic security, and the global race for critical green resources are redefining how we collaborate—and compete—on climate action. BCG outlines four possible paths for climate action: 1. Global Collaboration: Open trade and shared carbon pricing drive progress. 2. Regional Conflicts: Supply disruptions hinder climate goals. 3. Bloc Rivalries: Trade barriers slow green tech flows. 4. Point of No Return: Conflict halts climate action, accelerating warming. Reaching net zero in a divided world requires "coopetition"—collaborating with competitors to unlock progress and economic opportunity. Global leaders can act with common standards, carbon border adjustments, and balanced policies will be critical to navigating this complex landscape and sustaining progress. Sustainable progress depends on a collective commitment to new, resilient approaches. Read more: https://on.bcg.com/3OeEc2f #BCGCenterforGeopolitics #Coopetition

The Financial Times has attempted to measure the “real-world influence” of academic research, judged not by citations but downloads by industry leaders, policymakers and curious professionals. https://on.bcg.com/3Ayo8oZ And guess what? The second most influential paper, by this broader measure, was a study of the effects of AI in knowledge worker productivity, involving BCG consultants. The paper was produced by BCG’s Bruce Henderson Institute and BCG X, in collaboration with Harvard and Wharton Universities. It found that AI made consultants 12% more efficient, 25% faster, and boosted quality by 40%. Lower performers saw a 43% improvement in output, while high performers benefited from a 17% increase. However, AI users were 19% less likely to achieve correct answers on complex tasks. Want to know more? Download the paper yourself! https://on.bcg.com/3YRa9Th
