Student at Boston Latin School | Boston Children’s Chorus | Debate Spaces

This past Martin Luther King Jr. Day was my seventh MLK concert with Boston Children's Chorus at Symphony Hall, and I couldn’t be more grateful to have grown up with this amazing organization. BCC gives the youth a pathway to uplift voices of those who cannot, and calls upon adults to join us in the fight. Every year, this concert reminds me of the power of collective song and the importance of inspiring change. Honoring Dr. King’s legacy through music is always a moving experience, and I’m so thankful to share it with such an amazing community!

On day five of #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor Hubert “Hubie” Jones. Jones was a prominent social activist who championed the rights of Black and low-income communities in Boston, advocating for education and job programs, and co-founded The Boston Black United Front to promote racial justice and economic empowerment. As director of the Roxbury Multiservice Center (1965-1971), he helped establish a national model for social services. In 1967, Jones led an investigation into the exclusion of 10,000 Boston children from schools, which resulted in the creation of the Special Education and Bilingual Education Laws. He later became the first Black dean at Boston University’s School of Social Work (1977-1993) and founded the Boston Children's Chorus in 2002, bringing together youth from diverse backgrounds.

    Nonprofit leader, urban park innovator

So inspired by Boston Children's Chorus and their Road to Freedom concert yesterday at Symphony Hall! BCC is teaching kids not only how to sing, but how to use their voices to speak out about social and racial justice. Kudos to all the talent and hard work that made this happen. A beautiful antidote to Inauguration Day.

Every year, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Boston Children's Chorus gathers over 300 young voices from their after-school and in-school choirs to present an inspiring program exploring the Civil Rights Movement of the '50s and '60s and its ties to current movements both in the U.S. and abroad. This year marked the 22nd anniversary of Boston's cherished musical tradition which brough together a crowd of 2,000 both in person and online at Boston Symphony Orchestra to celebrate this treasured Boston tradition. The concert, "Road To Freedom," focused on the intertwined paths of two civil rights titans: Dr. King and Malcolm X. In "Road to Freedom," BCC delved into the complex relationship between these iconic figures, highlighting their shared struggles, differing approaches, and significant contributions to the fight for equality. Although often seen as ideological opposites, both Dr. King and Malcolm X were united in their commitment to civil rights and a vision of freedom and dignity for all.

  • Thank you Boston Medical Center (BMC) for sponsoring BCC's 22nd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert, "Road To Freedom!" BMC's President and CEO Alastair Bell MD MBA serves as Co-Chair of BCC's Board of Directors and is a proud BCC parent too. #bostonchildrenschorus #board #cochair #bostonmedicalcenter #mlkday #concert #sponsor #community #bmcpartner #legacy
