AMPLIFYING VOICES || Ft. Soloist Daniel R. Durrett “[That] night was a moment I’ll never forget — I had the honor of wearing a Nutcracker head made to match my skin tone. From Cincinnati to Houston and now in my 8th season with Boston Ballet, I’ve danced in many versions of this classic, always wondering why the heads didn’t reflect the dancers wearing them. We all know the reason… lol. But change is here. This season, Boston Ballet took a meaningful step toward greater representation, and I’m proud to have been the dancer to wear it. Representation matters. Progress matters. And moments like this remind me why we keep pushing forward. ????” - Daniel R. Since 1963, Boston Ballet’s internationally acclaimed performances of classical, neo-classical, and contemporary ballets, combined with a dedication to world-class dance education and community engagement, have made the institution a leader in its field, with a 61-year history of promoting excellence and access to dance.? Under the leadership of Artistic Director Mikko Nissinen and Executive Director Ming Min Hui, the Company, made up of 67 dancers and 14 nationalities, performs a diverse and acclaimed repertoire ranging from full-length classical ballets to masterworks by George Balanchine, and new works and world premieres by today’s finest contemporary choreographers.?? The New York Times hailed Boston Ballet’s repertoire as “one of the most eclectic in the country,” and as having dancers that are “striking by national and international standards.” ? Boston Ballet's second company, Boston Ballet II, gains experience performing with the Company and independently. Boston Ballet School, the official school of Boston Ballet, has a long-standing dedication to providing exceptional dance education and ballet training to students across three studios in Boston, Newton, and Natick. The School reaches more than 5,000 students (toddler to adult) each year through its core programs: Graduate Program, Professional Division at Walnut Hill, Classical Ballet Program, Children’s Program, Adaptive Dance Program, and Adult Dance Program. Boston Ballet School also operates community education and arts experiences around Boston and beyond, providing programming, events, and activities that connect the community to dance. Community programs reach more than 4,000 individuals in Boston and the surrounding region each year through Citydance, workshops, and trainings.

Tattoos have a history of being taboo in the ballet world, but that perception has been slowly evolving. And even though tattoos are becoming more common, some dancers may still feel uncertain about how their body art will be perceived. In this article, three artists share why they’ve gotten them, how they’ve navigated introducing their tattoos to artistic staff, and how they cover them (if necessary) for performances. AMPLIFYING VOICES || Ft. Choreographer My’Kal Stromile In honor of Black History Month, we are amplifying the voices of Black dancers and artists at Boston Ballet. Today, former Boston Ballet Artist and current choreographer My’Kal Stromile is taking over Instagram Stories! Join My’Kal for a special look at his choreography coming to the stage at the Boston Ballet Ball this weekend, Feb 8. My’Kal’s choreography extends well beyond Boston. At Juilliard, he received Choreographic Honors three years in a row and was awarded the school’s Hector Zaraspe Prize in 2018. In 2023, he created Form and Gesture for Boston Ballet. This past fall My’Kal was commissioned to create, Word for Word at the Paris Opera Ballet, notably as the first black American male choreographer to create a world premiere for the Paris Opera's Season Opening Gala. Hear from My'Kal on what this experience has meant to him: “Creating Word for Word for the Paris Opera Ballet at age 29 was a profound honor—an opportunity to engage with the history of one of the world’s most storied ballet institutions while bringing my own voice, my own lineage, into that space. As a young Black American choreographer, standing in the Palais Garnier, shaping movement within its walls, I felt the weight of tradition but also the urgency of progress. That experience was not just about creating a ballet; it was about expanding the conversation of who contributes to ballet’s future. To now share my work with Boston Ballet during Black History Month feels like a full-circle moment—a celebration of the past, present, and future of ballet, reflecting the many voices that shape its ongoing story.” -My'Kal Stromile Stay tuned as we continue to share more stories within our Boston Ballet community.
