关于我们
Boston Area Gleaners is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization committed to supporting an equitable, just, and sustainable local food system. By working closely with farmers, volunteers, and hunger relief agencies, we work to power a supply chain from farms to those in need, reduce food waste, and promote long-term farm sustainability. Since our founding in 2004, we remain the region's only on-farm gleaning organization, and are uniquely poised to bridge a critical gap in our food system—between the more than 30% of crops that go unharvested in farmers' fields and the 1 in 7 Massachusetts residents (including 1 in 5 households with children) that are food-insecure. Throughout the growing season, we organize volunteer trips to local farms to harvest and pack high-quality fruits and vegetables that would otherwise be plowed under—and distribute that food to frontline agencies serving food-insecure families.

It's been a pleasure working with Boston Medical Center (BMC) on their unique rooftop garden initiative!
?? Community Highlight: Boston Medical Center's Rooftop Gardens & Food Programs ?? Boston Medical Center (BMC) is doing incredible work to support food security and health access in their community! What started as a single rooftop garden for BMC's cafeteria has blossomed into two rooftop spaces that serve both patients and local communities. ???? Through a partnership with Boston Area Gleaners, BMC's 4,915-square-foot garden distributes fresh produce to local nonprofits and community centers twice weekly during the growing season. Through their ‘Preventative Food Program,’ BMC also provides food “prescriptions” for patients who are identified as food insecure. Every two weeks, these patients can visit a hospital-run food pantry and receive boxes of nutritious food tailored to their specific health needs. ???? BMC is setting a powerful example of how healthcare institutions can go beyond medical care to support the well-being of the people they serve. ?? ?#CommunityHighlight #FoodSecurity #BMC #HealthAccess #SustainableInitiatives #Boston Boston Medical Center (BMC) Boston Area Gleaners, Inc. Yesterday, employees from World Centric stopped by the Gleaners to help sort and package 250 pounds of leeks for our food access partners! We also want to take this opportunity to thank them for the generous grant they awarded us recently. World Centric gives 25% of their profits to social and environmental organizations to further their work in creating a better world. We appreciate when corporations take the time to work with us and invest in our mission! #volunteering #supportlocal #local #gleaning #produce #nonprofit #glean #community #volunteergroup

Volunteers from CarGurus packed dehydrated mushrooms for our food access partners today! Mushrooms tend to be a rarity in the food access space so we were excited to get our hands on several pallets worth. In each bag, we included a pamphlet with a recipe for dried shiitake mushroom stuffing - just in time for the upcoming holidays. We were grateful for the sunshine and all the help we received from the CarGurus team today! #gleaning #volunteer #local #produce #community #nonprofit #foodaccess #supportlocal

Last week, the Gleaners' operations team gathered to review the staffing model for our Food Access Program. In this interactive session, the operations team analyzed the tasks involved in their routines and organized them into specific areas of work. This approach will help us define clear roles within the team moving forward. It was a productive, sunny day to strategize together!

We are in need of banana boxes to pack and transport our gleaned produce to our food access partners! Banana boxes can be collected from grocery stores, pantries, or anywhere that sells bananas. You can load up your vehicle with boxes and drop them off at Stonefield Farm in the shipping container next to the white garage. We'll keep a running total of your donations and will be in touch to give you merch in recognition of your efforts! You can visit our website to learn more about our banana box efforts.

We love tomatoes! ?? ??
Wow! Whether you say tomayto or tomahto, that’s a whole lotta tomatoes! ???????????? Thanks to Boston Area Gleaners, Inc. for bringing us 14,770 lbs of them ?? — 12 pallets in all — to our MetroWest Crossdock. This goes a long way to helping us feed the hungry. As our lines for food assistance grow longer, it’s donations like these that make a real difference. ?? uwotc.org/feed

World Food Day is celebrated globally on October 16th, and it honors the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. The theme for this year is, “Right to Foods for a Better Life and a Better Future,” which emphasizes the importance of ensuring everyone has affordable access to enough diverse, nutritious and safe foods. This commitment to providing cost-effective produce for the community directly aligns with our mission at the Gleaners. We encourage you to take a moment today to reflect on our local food system, and how we can work together to improve it for the benefit of all. #produce #supportlocal #volunteering #worldfoodday #nonprofit
