?? Data mishandling in Chicago’s migrant shelters A federal complaint alleges Favorite Healthcare Staffing mishandled personal and health information of shelter residents. Tens of thousands of new arrivals have passed through Chicago’s migrant shelter system. Many of them might have had their data compromised because of how shelter employees and contractors handled their personal information, according to former shelter staff and documents reviewed by Borderless Magazine and the Investigative Project on Race and Equity. Some migrants faced extortion and scams due to compromised information, according to the former contractors who filed the complaint. This weekend, Borderless won first place in immigration reporting from?the Chicago Journalists Association?for our investigations on Chicago’s largest migrant shelter — led by Mauricio Pe?a, Katrina Pham, Nissa Rhee and Sebastián Hidalgo. At its peak, more than 2,500 migrants lived in the Halsted shelter in Pilsen. Residents in the former warehouse turned migrant shelter said they were being treated “like dogs.’’ Our investigative reporting uncovered how, in the scramble to set up shelter for new arrivals, the city and state housed families in a building that failed to meet the basic standards for emergency shelter laid out by the U.N. Refugee Agency. Although the Halsted shelter closed earlier this year, we are continuing to report on the city’s response to and treatment of migrants and immigrants throughout the city. Your support makes it possible. If you donate today, your donation will be TRIPLED as a part of our ongoing Newsmatch fundraiser! https://lnkd.in/gxQUy3ei
