Recently, our leadership and field teams joined BORDER for a project walkthrough, reviewing both the design and installation to ensure we continue refining and improving future collaborations. A great article illustrating the Byzantine government structure of Greater Los Angeles. Beyond this explainer lies the LA City Council, endless Neighborhood Councils, LA County Public Works, independent cities like West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Pasadena, etc. and their influential agencies (planning, engineering, services). To recover and rebuild after these disastrous fires we need collective political will that hasn’t been seen in LA for decades. The beauty of Southern California’s natural environment is unmatched, but this week has shown the delicate balance of living within it as wildfires rage throughout the region. Our thoughts are with those affected by, and those battling, the destructive conditions. Los Angeles County continues to be transformed by environmental shifts. To better manage dramatic swings in climate, landscape architects in California must be well-versed in the planning, design, and mitigation the changes. BORDER has projects in wildfire-prone areas of San Diego, Los Angeles, Malibu, and Ventura County. We’ve embraced state, regional, and local guidelines for defensible spaces and protective planting designs to better manage our balance with the environment. The process is challenging, and the results create a new aesthetic and perception of SoCal landscape, but they reinforce our connection to nature. ? Winter brings shorter days but longer shadows, allowing us to discover new patterns in our landscape designs. These unexpected moments are constantly changing and creating new experiences. #MomentOfZen #LandscapeDesign #RestorativeLandscape ?

We’re always searching for new planting combinations to create a delicate edge, throw an unexpected shadow pattern, or to provide contrast against hardscape. This is becoming increasingly important in our urban projects given the density and limited open space. Horticulture is a foundational element of restorative landscapes. It soothes, softens, cools, and provides habitat and nourishment. #restorativelandscape #BORDER_LA

I'll be interested to see if this executive salary will expedite LADWP's coordination and execution of electrical service to new housing projects in Los Angeles. I'd prefer the extra $300M go to additional LADWP staff to keep pace with much needed development in the city. Every project, affordable or market-rate, are at the mercy of LADWP staff and services. Lack of engagement and urgency from their side of the table costs significant time and money, which in turn costs LA valuable housing opportunities. We can't create a competitive housing market without increased inventory and options. LADWP is a big cog in the machine that makes that happen. I hope this salary comes with a mission to be more effective and collaborative with those building in the city. https://lnkd.in/gTer6WpD
