Inflation, cost of living and longevity are hitting people's retirement plans as many are planning (and needing) to work longer than they original thought. As reported by Global News, 66% of Canadians are pushing out or shifting their retirement plans. Many are planning on working longer or working part time in retirement. And for those that are already retired, many are reducing their spending on leisure or travel in their retirement. https://lnkd.in/dbWiaFW7 #aging #longevity #retirement #retirementplanning #money #savings #canada

The idea of retiring to a place you have vacationed in can be extremely appealing. But just because you loved it in vacation, doesn't mean that you will love it full time in retirement. Mike Drak takes a look into this retirement lifestyle choice and suggests some things to consider before packing up your life and taking the leap that could affect both your health and happiness. https://lnkd.in/dhkH7fmn #aging #longevity #retirement #retirementplanning #travel #moving #retirementlifestyle

When someone retires, you very often hear that exercise is part of their retirement plan. They figure that once they have stopped working, time will not be a limiting factor for them. But it doesn't always work out this way. This was the question that was posed to Antoinette Petrillo CPRC, CFP, in our "Ask a Retirement Coach" series; "I know how important exercise is to our health and longevity. While I was working, I found it really difficult to find the time to do this and assumed that when I retired, this would be the first thing that I would focus on given the extra time I would now have. But it doesn't seem to be working out that way. Every day I get up with the intention to exercise but always seem to find something else to do. How do I change this and ensure that I make exercising a priority?" Given our extended longevity and likelihood to need to continue working, I've always believed that having sabbaticals along the way to go back to school, travel, spend time with family or just take a break could really help balance our lives. It's great to see that this is starting to happen. Younger generations recognize that they will likely need to work longer and realize that a career break doesn't mean the end of a career. They also value their work / life balance so they are doing something about it. Whether it's called a micro-retirement, liberty leaves or career break - they are taking these time outs from their careers to regroup and refresh. But there is also the financial reality that stops many. These breaks are unpaid and so financial planning prior to taking time off is a necessity that needs to be considered. But it's a good sign to see that people are embracing more options now than just running to the retirement finish line and falling down in an exhaustive heap. https://lnkd.in/eF2BSfGV #longevity #work #retirement #retirementplanning #career #burnout #libertyleave #careerbreak #miniretirement

The research is mounting of the importance of continued working (paid or volunteered) has on our health and wellbeing. Here’s a great clip of how the Japanese have embraced this. Given they are globally out in front of the aging curve - think there’s something to be learned here. #aging #longevity #purpose #health #mentalhealth #stayconnected #stayengaged

Chances are you know how critical balance is to aging. If poor, it can affect our mobility and lead to falls which pose some significant risks. So how can we push this back? Exercise can help. The The New York Times published 5 exercises that we can do to help improve our balance. Just start with doing them 2 - 3 times a week and increase as you get stronger. A small investment for a major return. https://lnkd.in/eXtNY-gh #aging #longevity #balance #mobility #exercise

Recently, I couldn’t figure out why I was feeling so grey. Sure, the weather was dragging me down (-30 degrees Celsius and 50 cm of snow can do that to a person). But there was something else. I just didn’t feel like I had any motivation. I felt like I was just going through the motions of living but my mood seemed like it was more than just the February blues. Then I got a notification from my phone. My online usage had jumped up by a whopping 31%! When I looked into where I was spending my time, I had been scrolling through social media way more than I normally do. Could all this online activity this be contributing to my feelings of blah? Turns out it could. There is growing evidence that our reliance on social media is not very good for our mental health. But as I looked into this topic further I discovered a new trend underway called Social Rewilding. The intention behind social rewilding is for people to reverse the negative effects of being attached to online media and establish a new and balanced relationship with technology. So I'm not sure if I need to embrace this new concept or just wait for spring but it certainly gave me something to think about. How about you? Is social rewilding in your future? https://lnkd.in/eQGEq8Zm #aging #longevity #technology #socialmedia #socialrewilding

Here's another interesting study confirming that yes, our genes do play a role in our longevity however our socioeconomic status, lifestyle choices and environment play an even bigger role. What is also interesting in this research is the role that early exposure can have on our longevity. Items such as body weight at age 10 and maternal smoking around birth can have an impact 30 to 80 years later. https://lnkd.in/eX6BBgGd #aging #longevity #health #lifestyle #exercise #environment

Who says you can't go back again? After announcing his retirement back in 2018, 83 year old singer Paul Simon is now reversing that decision and going back out on tour. This is a great example of if there is something that you loved before and stopped, there is no reason you couldn't go back and do it again! https://lnkd.in/ekwKZwsC #aging #longevity #retirement #passion #purpose #doitagain #dontstopmenow
