Funny enough, it’s always been easier for me to speak up for others than for myself. Back in the day when I was a nonprofit C-Suite exec, I learned layoffs were coming.? My program was going to be sunset, and my incredible, committed team was on the line. My first thought? “OMG. What will happen to all these people?”? My second thought? It would be a huge blow for the organization to lose our team’s talent. While two?people were ready to move on, the rest wanted to stay. So, I went to work. I got through to the right decision maker, advocated for each person and fought to make sure they found a place elsewhere in the organization. In the end, nobody got laid off … except me. ?? Don’t feel bad … that set off a chain of events that led to the freedom of starting Bonsai Leadership Group LLC. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. What I did learn, however, is that advocating works. You can build power, protect your people, and create meaningful change just by speaking up. And the more you do it for others, the easier it becomes to advocate for yourself. We’re happy to share that Garry Mugar is taking on a new role as Grants Coordinator at Plastic Solutions Fund! Garry has 15 years of experience in international development cooperation, working on diverse investments for major international agencies such as Australian Aid, The Global Fund, and the Netherlands Ministry. His work focuses on critical areas including education, combating human trafficking, addressing HIV/TB, empowering rightsholders, and other significant fields. As the Grants Coordinator, he will be primarily responsible for overseeing and streamlining the grantmaking process to ensure a user-friendly and seamless process for PSF grantees, program managers, and other key stakeholders.
