FGCU Research Study in Bonita Bay Wetlands The Macias Wildlife Society is proud to sponsor a research study in partnership with Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Department of Biological Sciences. Titled “Quantifying Wading Bird Prey Base Using Minnow Traps”, this study will be led by FGCU professors Dr. Andrew Durso and Dr. Oscar Johnson and will run from November 2024 to April 2025. The research involves placing groups of 30 plastic minnow traps in five Bonita Bay wetlands once a month for five nights. FGCU students and professors will monitor the traps daily to collect data on fish, insects, larvae, snakes, frogs, and other species found in the wetlands. They will also document bird species and measure environmental factors such as pH and salinity. Data from Bonita Bay wetlands will be compared to nearby wetlands, including those on FGCU’s campus. This comprehensive analysis aims to provide valuable insights into the prey base for wading birds and the overall health of our local ecosystems. Signs will be posted at each location identifying the traps as FGCU research so that residents and staff know to leave the traps alone. The students and professors will be wearing vests labeled “FGCU Research”.?Findings will be presented in a detailed report and a resident presentation in Spring 2025. We look forward to supporting this important research and gaining a deeper understanding of prey base in our wetlands. #FGCU #FGCUResearch #WildlifeStudy #WadingBirds #EnvironmentalResearch #BiologicalSciences #FloridaWildlife #BonitaBay #BBCA

Bonita Bay kicks off its 2024-2025 United Way fundraising campaign! Bonita Bay first began its partnership with United Way of Lee, Hendry, and Glades Counties in 1998, and after 25 years, we have raised nearly 20 million in donations. For the past 6 consecutive years, our residents have donated more than $1 million per year. Bonita Bay is the only gated community in the United States to accomplish such a feat. Additionally, for the sixth year in a row, Bonita Bay has earned a spot in the Million Dollar Circle of Excellence as the top community donor group, alongside Publix, the corporate representative in the Million Dollar Circle of Excellence Club.
