The future of our flats fishery depends on the conservation actions we take today! Be informed and be engaged by attending the world’s largest gathering of flats fishery stakeholders this November in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. BTT's 8th International Science Symposium will focus on critical fishery issues from the perspective of ‘landscape conservation’ – an approach that tackles water quality issues and habitat loss at the largest and most meaningful scales possible. Join us for insightful presentations and engaging discussions led by leading scientists, resource managers, industry leaders, state and federal policymakers, conservation advocates, legendary anglers, and top fishing guides from Florida and the world. As in the past, this triennial event will also be a celebration of our angling community! Space is limited – be sure to register early at BTT.org/Symposium! #BTTSymposium
关于我们
Bonefish & Tarpon Trust (BTT) is a non-profit organization focused on conserving bonefish, tarpon and permit — the species, their habitats and the larger fisheries they comprise. The organization, which pursues its mission through science-based conservation, education and advocacy, was founded in 1997 by grassroots volunteers seeking to reverse the declines they were witnessing in bonefish and tarpon populations in the Florida Keys. Today, BTT continues a comprehensive research and conservation program in the Keys and has expanded its work across the Caribbean basin to include staffed programs in The Bahamas, Belize and Mexico as well as grant-funded research projects in Cuba and other locations.

Reports of spinning fish are down this winter compared to last year in the Florida Keys. This is promising news, however, the underlying cause continues to be investigated by BTT and partners. If you see spinning or dead fish, it is essential that these reports reach scientists. Any unusual fish behavior should be reported to FWC or LKGA – reporting resources are linked at BTT.org/Spinning-Fish. BTT, in collaboration with the Lower Keys Guides Association, launched a comprehensive research initiative in January 2025 funded by $1.75 million awarded to BTT by the State of Florida through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The initiative brings together an interdisciplinary team of experts from Florida International University, Florida State University, the University of South Alabama, Florida Gulf Coast University, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife. The ongoing research is critical for not only identifying the cause of the spinning fish phenomenon but also for developing science-based recommendations to mitigate future impacts on the Florida Keys’ ecosystem. Initial findings strongly suggest a link between elevated levels of Gambierdiscus algae and the spinning fish phenomenon. Researchers have found evidence of the potent neurotoxins produced by this algae in affected fish tissues and water samples. Read the latest from this ongoing research: https://lnkd.in/ebyD73_G

BTT was a proud sponsor of the 40th Annual Everglades Coalition Conference. We are inspired by the historic progress to date that was made possible through the unity of mission found between the diverse members of the coalition, stakeholders and policymakers. Now, we need to continue this momentum by working together to authorize, fund and construct essential restoration projects to save America’s Everglades. Special thanks to our hosts, the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, and the Everglades Coalition. #EVCO25

Healthy wetlands = healthy fisheries. But these biodiverse habitats face increasing threats – from pollution, the altered flow of freshwater, and unwise development that disrupts or destroys natural systems. Right now, we need to prioritize the protection of habitats that remain intact, while at the same time working to save those that can be restored. In honor of #WorldWetlandsDay, we’re highlighting three BTT restoration projects in progress: ?? On Grand Bahama’s East End, we will soon break ground on two projects to restore two tidal creek systems that will reconnect fish to flats habitats that have been inaccessible for decades. ?? In Southwest Florida, we have completed the final planning stages for hydrologic restoration projects that will restore the flow of fresh water to thousands of acres of mangroves and marshlands in Rookery Bay. ?? In Mexico's Yucatán, we are partnering with Ducks Unlimited and Ducks Unlimited Mexico (DUMAC) to restore altered hydrology and revive a mangrove ecosystem that supports waterfowl as well as juvenile tarpon and snook. #BringingSciencetotheFight #Wetlands #Conservation #Habitat

We are excited to announce that Capt. Tim Carlile and Dr. Roy Crabtree will be inducted into the BTT Circle of Honor! “Bonefish & Tarpon Trust stands today on a foundation that Tim Carlile and Dr. Roy Crabtree helped lay," said BTT President and CEO Jim McDuffie. "Roy was among the first scientists to tackle important questions about flats species while Tim volunteered countless hours in support of the same pioneering research. We are grateful to them for their advocacy and many contributions to our mission." Acclaimed Florida Keys fishing guide Capt. Tim Carlile and renowned fisheries scientist Dr. Roy Crabtree will be inducted into the BTT Circle of Honor on April 10, 2025, during BTT’s 12th Annual Florida Keys Dinner at Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada, Florida. https://lnkd.in/e8w6jhtp

BTT continues to collaborate with Bahamian officials for enhanced protections of critical ecosystems! Thank you to the Hon. Vaughn P. Miller, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources, consultant Keino Cambridge, and Danielle Hanek of the Bahamas Forestry Unit who met with Rashema Ingraham, BTT Caribbean Program Director, and Vaughn Roberts, BTT Board Member, for a positive discussion about BTT’s research and conservation goals in The Bahamas. #Bahamas #Conservation

Tarpon are not only WHAT they eat, but WHERE they eat. The findings of two BTT-funded collaborative research projects will give advocates for the Silver King the evidence needed to fight for healthy habitats and forage fisheries all along their migration routes from Florida along the Gulf and Atlantic coastal states. If you have experience bonefishing in South Florida, please take the Bonefish Fishery Assessment Survey before February 1 by visiting BTT.org/Bonefish-Survey! 75% of the world’s fisheries don’t have a stock assessment. This is true for valuable sportfish like bonefish, tarpon, and permit. In order for conservation measures to be effective, we need high-quality information on how our fisheries are doing. Numerous factors, including habitat loss and degradation and water quality declines, have hurt our bonefish population in the Florida Keys. Quantifying changes in the fishery and fish population is powerful information that we can use to push for the improvements needed to restore the fishery. Visit BTT.org/Bonefish-Survey to learn more.
