Admit it: do you do this?
You keep the neighborhood Zillow alerts going long after buying a house. You can’t stop refreshing the StubHub app, despite already having your concert tickets in hand. Or, you find yourself trawling the LinkedIn profiles of former colleagues from a job you quit years back. Savoring our own good calls—delighting in the confirmation that we got the best deal on fares to Miami or planned ahead and booked that impossible-to-get table for two—is hardly a bad habit. And the technology in our phones, from hyperspecific communities to endless push notifications, enables us to tap into that afterglow at any time. Is that such an awful thing? Deep down, we know that scrolling and clicking can backfire, leaving us feeling worse. And yet it so often delivers a rush. ?? Heather Noggle, a business consultant in Springfield, Mo., underwent Lasik surgery in 2014, perfecting her vision. But she kept her monthly “it’s time to refill your contacts” emails coming, figuring the reminder would prompt gratitude. Noggle finally unsubscribed after eight years. ?? Author and motivational speaker Amy Blankson says that the more we live in our memories and give in to distraction, the more we’re missing out on the present. Try reflecting on that big win writing about it in a journal. When you feel the pull to open an app for validation, ask yourself, “Is this something that is going to help me move forward?” ?? Carey Morewedge, a marketing professor at Questrom School of Business, Boston University, recommends keeping your comparisons to your own life, as opposed to looking at others. Were you better off on this trip than, say, the one you took when your kids were toddlers? Read more from Rachel Feintzeig: https://lnkd.in/ebUrQMJ8
