Niina Nibling, MGPS is passionate about empowering individuals, communities, and organizations in unlocking their potential to create social impact. Niina started her career in education, encouraging students to learn more about the world and think outside of the box. She also interned in Kenya, Rwanda, Hong Kong, and Montana, working closely with local communities and organizations striving to achieve positive societal changes. These experiences led her to study policies involving sustainability in the United States. Her recent professional work includes developing monitoring, evaluation, and reporting frameworks for nonprofits and foundations across the globe and assisting them in visualizing their social impact. Niina graduated with her Master’s in Global Policy Studies from the University of Texas at Austin and her Bachelor’s in Education from Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (Japan). Niina previously supported Boldly Go clients as a project consultant and we are fortunate to have her play an even greater role on our team! At this year's Goldman Sachs Philanthropy Forum, our Co-Founder Jeff Kutash interviewed Philanthropist and Boldly Go Advisory Board Member Max Disney about navigating the multi-generational evolution of his family foundation's board. When Disney joined the foundation's board at the age of 18, there were few opportunities for younger generations to influence decision making. When it came time for the next generations of the family to take the reins, they decided to broaden participation and increase engagement for all family members. Reimagining board practices and the board culture to be more inclusive required a series of honest and sometimes difficult conversations. However, the process of working through inter-generational challenges improved the foundation’s impact and brought family members closer together around a shared philanthropic mission. Today, there is a fun, engaging onboarding process for family members starting at age 15 until they are invited to formally join the board at 18. For example, younger family members are encouraged to make calls informing grant recipients that they are getting funded. “The joy they will hear from the other side of the phone will get them hooked. Making someone’s passion and vision possible is the best feeling,” Disney said. Jeff summarized these lessons for bringing the next generation into family philanthropy as: ?? Engage younger generations as early as possible in the family’s philanthropy ?? Provide role models and hands-on experiences to help the next generation learn by doing ?? The environment we live in directly affects our physical and mental health, sense of belonging, learning and overall wellbeing. Neuroaesthetics, a rapidly growing discipline, explores how aesthetic experiences affect the brain and body. Boldly Go Philanthropy conducted a landscape analysis in this field to uncover opportunities for the Pedersen Foundation to be innovative and impactful in their philanthropy. We interviewed 17 researchers, practitioners, policy experts, and funders -- Here are some of their key insights: ?? Research consistently shows that music and visual arts are powerful therapeutic tools. ?? Prominent leaders in the space include Susan Magsamen, Anjan Chatterjee, Upali Nanda, Suchi Reddy. The IAM lab has been essential at raising awareness and laying the groundwork for multidisciplinary collaboration. ?? In the next decade, experts believe that neuroaesthetics will become more integrated into other fields, such as healthcare (designing hospitals to facilitate recovery), education (designing schools to accelerate learning) and workforce development (increasing productivity and improving efficiency). Neuroaesthetics is emerging and building momentum. Our Co-Founder and Managing Partner, Jeff Kutash, recently spoke at The University of Texas School of Law 's 42nd Annual Nonprofit Organizations Institute about measuring social impact! Performance measurement is a key to success for social sector initiatives, yet many lack a credible and systematic approach to evaluation. Jeff and Nadine Dechausay, Chief Strategy Officer at the Communities Foundation of Texas each shared their perspectives on why measurement is challenging, approachable frameworks for evaluating impact, and illustrative examples. For example, Boldly Go supported the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas' Advance Together initiative by working with four collective impact networks in Texas to understand what data mattered for their goals, and identify the fewest, most meaningful metrics to track their progress.
