Many in the book-publishing industry know there’s been an alarming rise in scammers posing as TV or movie producers, preying on authors with promises of turning their books into big projects. These scams can be incredibly convincing, but they are designed to take advantage of authors' hard work and dreams. Authors need to stay vigilant, to protect themselves and their intellectual property, and think about these factors when they receive questionable messages from people posing as TV/film producers: 1) How did they find your book? Out of the 4 million new books published each year, how likely is it they found your book and read it? 2) If a studio was interested in licensing content for film/TV, it is unlikely they would reach out to the author directly. In most cases, the publisher holds the rights to negotiate deals like this, and they would start with the publisher. 3) Do a Google search on their contact information – often this will help clarify that a person is not a legit representative of a studio. Also, check the URL on their email signature and see if it matches the site address from the company. 4) Often the scammers will bring up financial questions in a first communication – which is not industry standard or professional from someone who is credible. 5) When in doubt, reach out!?If you receive a questionable email, double check with your publisher.
