    We had the honor of kicking off claimsXchange’s Inaugural Claims Academy this morning. The Claims Academy is an intensive 2 day curriculum for claims professionals to increase their knowledge in claims management and earn their ICMS in the following tracks: casualty, construction, transportation, work comp and cyber claims. Howard Shafer, Debbie Champion and I started the day off by teaching the entire Academy about what happens when a claim goes into litigation and how claims and defense counsel can interface to create the best defense for the insured client. This group was ready to learn and we are so excited for them to complete the Academy this week! We love working with bright, interested learners of our profession. We always welcome the opportunity to work with claims to learn how we can be partners in our defense. ?? Best of luck this week! ???? ?? ??     Reflecting on a career. At the end of 2022, I stopped taking new cases. Clients I had worked with more than 30 years were successfully transferred to other partners in the firm. It took another 16 months to complete my cases that remained. Earlier this week my last case settled, almost 38 years to the day from when I graduated law school. My how time flies. Trials all over Montana over 4 decades. I cannot count the number of court appearances, depositions, hearings, and the like. Stories happy and sad to tell. I was lucky to get to travel to over 40 states in my work. Many people I met in the business over these 38 years remain good friends. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been able to call it a career on good terms, at a time of my choosing, and when my skills were still in good order! I did not want to be a lawyer who by necessity or default worked far past my prime. Many in the law do not get that opportunity. Yet life does not end when your career is done. Trying something new is just around the corner for each of us, and I was able to parlay my career as a lawyer into work as a mediator. This has been a refreshing change, helping people solve their disputes rather than being one of the lawyers in the middle of the fray. Perhaps most important, doing this work on a schedule I choose has allowed me to stay intellectually involved in the law without its daily pressures, and it has allowed me more time to enjoy life, play golf, spend time with my family and friends, and hike and bike the desert southwest during the winter months. To those in the profession my age and older, take a small step out from behind your desk, contemplate something new, and if you have the opportunity jump at the chance and enjoy what life has to offer. I assure you that it is much more than just being a lawyer. ??
