    This #metalmonday, we're exploring the vital role of metals in human blood. While iron is the most well-known, thanks to its essential function in haemoglobin, our blood also contains several other important metals. Iron enables red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, but trace metals like copper and zinc are also crucial. Copper helps in the formation of red blood cells by aiding iron metabolism, while zinc supports immune function and wound healing. Even tiny amounts of chromium, manganese, and cobalt contribute to overall health—cobalt, for example, is a key component of vitamin B12, which is essential for nerve function and DNA production. Without these metals, our bodies wouldn’t function properly. They may be present in minuscule amounts, but their impact is immense! #metals #iron #science #engineering #biology

    This #metalmonday, we're looking at the heaviest building on Earth—the Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest, Romania. Weighing in at an estimated 4.1 million tonnes, this colossal structure is a testament to the sheer volume of materials used in its construction. Built during the 1980s under Nicolae Ceau?escu’s regime, the palace contains around 700,000 tonnes of steel and bronze, 1 million cubic metres of marble, and vast amounts of crystal and wood. The steel framework provides essential structural support, while the extensive use of bronze is most evident in the massive doors and decorative elements. Despite its weight, the building remains stable thanks to deep foundations reinforced with steel.
