My maternity leave ended one year ago next week - time flies! I'm so grateful that my employer and my state offered paid leave and I got to spend 6 fully compensated months at home with my son (not without some torture to figure out the system, but we'll leave that post for another day). However, not everyone is so lucky. In fact, most are not. Ready for these stats? - The US offers 0 weeks of nationally funded paid leave. - Only 14 out of 50 states offer paid leave. - 73% of private sector employees do not have paid leave. WHAT??? Paid leave is associated with both improved physical and mental health for parents AND significant impacts on the child. It's associated with lower mortality rates in children, lower rehospitalization rates, lower rates of pain, reduced blood pressure....the list continues. Nevermind, that its better for business. Greater retention, lower turnover, better job satisfaction, better productivity, healthier workforce. Bobbie put out a call to action a few weeks ago to join their coalition of private sector businesses in support of paid leave and I'm grateful when I brought it to Manju Dawkins, MD, founder & CEO of Thimble, it was a no brainer that we were in. The coalition is a group of brands and individuals who are helping families impacted by the lack of paid leave. Together we're providing 120 families across the country with $580 microgrants. $580 is the minimum amount the Family and Medical Act - the current federal paid leave program in front of congress - would provide as a monthly benefit.
