#Rwanda could export 20 containers equivalent to 384 tonnes of green coffee worth Rwf2.5 billion to Seoul in South Korea, according to National Agricultural Export Development Board. The markets were secured during “Coffee Expo Seoul 2024” in South Korea.

It includes varieties from the two species that are in wide cul-ti-va-tion globally—C. ara-bi-ca (known as Ara-bi-ca), and C. canepho-ra (known as Robusta). ?? Ara-bi-ca Ara-bi-ca is the dom-i-nant species in Cen-tral and South Amer-i-ca and much of east Africa, and is con-sid-ered to pro-duce the high-est cup qual-i-ty. The Ara-bi-ca species is made up of many vari-eties or cul-ti-vars?—?dis-tinct types that are able to sex-u-al-ly repro-duce with one another. ?? Robus-ta Robus-ta is the sec-ond-most com-mon-ly grown cof-fee species; its com-mer-cial impor-tance has grown steadi-ly over the last cen-tu-ry and it now accounts for approx-i-mate-ly 40% of glob-al pro-duc-tion. The genet-ic diver-si-ty of robus-ta cof-fee is much larg-er than that of ara-bi-ca, and it is only just begin-ning to be explored by breed-ers and the indus-try alike. If you ask industry professionals and enthusiasts where coffee originates from, you could receive a variety of responses. While many people point to Ethiopia and Uganda as the “birthplace” of arabica and robusta, respectively, others believe that Yemen, Somalia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, or South Sudan are where coffee has its genetic roots. According to a study recently published in Nature Genetics, researchers at the University of Buffalo in New York have traced arabica’s origins back to Ethiopia – further supporting claims that the East African country was the first in the world to grow coffee. Even more intriguing is that the study says arabica is estimated to be between 610,000 and one million years old. If this is accurate, coffee would out date our own species (Homo sapiens). But with numerous scientific papers citing various African or Middle Eastern countries as the world’s first coffee producers, we may never truly know where it originates from. Encouraging and supporting this kind of research, however, is key to acknowledging and celebrating coffee’s genetic roots – and the industry needs to take note. Climate change is significantly impacting coffee production by altering traditional growing conditions. Rising temperatures affect the geographical distribution of coffee-growing regions, and extreme weather events such as droughts, floods, and heatwaves threaten crop yields, affect both quantity and quality of coffee beans. Crops such as coffee are highly dependent on animal pollinators.?A study published in Science Advances, led by Postdoctoral Researcher Joe Millard, explores the interplay between climate change, land use change, and their impact on pollinator biodiversity, revealing significant implications for global crop pollination. Better plants should be both available and accessible to farmers in producing countries. Availability means that better plants exist—improved varieties have been developed out of breeding programs, seed stock exists and is high quality, and there are healthy supply chains to move seed to nurseries and to farmers. Accessibility means that better plants are affordable and in reasonable proximity to farmers, which requires that: ? Appropriate financing mechanisms are in place ? Renovation programs and practices create adequate demand ? There are enough nurseries spread out in each major region ? Nurseries are solvent, healthy businesses ? Nurseries are following best agricultural practices to produce healthy and vigorous plants ? Nurseries have enough of the right varieties at the right time for farmers to plant. The “#coffee origin trip” and its #parties have long been considered to be an iconic rite of passage in specialty coffee, almost a pilgrimage of sorts. Now, #financialpressures mean travel is less of a priority. Rising costs and shifting priorities mean trips to origin are no longer an "essential" for most businesses. Jordan Montgomery speaks with Tracy A.
