Hey Students :) My friend Audrey Chen is hosting a beginner friendly (virtual) hackathon from November 27th - December 1st! For lots who are pursuing a career in tech, hackathons are an amazing opportunity to meet others, build with others, and learn with others. And for many mainstream hackathons, they’re usually very well prized and affiliated with internship opportunities. The thing is, there aren’t many beginner friendly ones out there - which is why I’m happy to hear someone like Audrey Chen is hosting one that is both unique and lax. And a little brain rot-ty ?? I recommend if you’re a student aligned to UX or SWE, to try working on this with a small group. Every national conference I attended had over 15,000 participants—which is overwhelming—not just for attendees but for recruiters too. That makes me appreciate even more the real, human moments we shared. And here are three interactions I’ll never forget: - ?? ???????? ???? *after looking down at my shoes*: “???? ??????????! ??????’???? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????? ??????????. ??’???? ???????? ?????????????? ?????? ???????????? ???????? ???? ???????? ?? ?????????? ???? ????????’???? ???? ???????? ??????????!” This happened at the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) conference, where I met so many amazing women. One lent me a portable charger, and another gave me her cookies before my interview. Being surrounded by such kind and supportive women reminded me I’m not alone and gave me the strength. - ?? ?????????????????? ????: “"?? ???????? ???? ?????????? ?????????? ?????? ?????? ?????????? ??????. ?? ???????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???? ?????????? ??????????????, ?????? ?? ?????????????? ???????????? ?? ??????. ?????? ??????, ???????? ?? ???? ???? ??????????????????. ??????????????????, ?????? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ???? ???????? ?????? ?????????? ??????????????. His vulnerability got me. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve felt my self-esteem plummet after receiving rejection emails from companies I had high hopes for. But as he said, rejection is redirection. - ?? ???????? ???? ?????????????? ????: “?? ???? ???????? ??????????????????. ?????????? ?????? ???????? ???????????? ?? ???????? ?????????? ????????. ?????? ????, ?????????????????? ???????????? ?????? ???? ????????????, ?????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????? ???? ??????????????. ?????? ???????? ???? ???????? ???????? ???????? ???????? ?????? ??????—?????????? ????, ?????????????? ?????? ???????? ???????? ???? ???? ??????.” I met this amazing lady in the SHPE hospitality suite, and we immediately clicked over a conversation about California-Chicago weather. I was surprised by how openly she shared her human side as a recruiter, reminding me that, in the end, it’s all about finding the person they’d want to work with for 8 hours a day. I’m truly greatful for those who take time to care about their candidates. It’s easy to forget, but recruiters are human too. If you can make a real connection and show who you are, that’s the true value of attending conferences. What inspiring stories have you experienced at conferences? ???Calling all US undergraduate designers! ?? Rice Design, Rice University's largest digital design organization, is back with our third annual Rice Design-a-thon 2025! ???????? Held from January 31st to February 2nd, Rice Design-a-thon is a nationwide, virtual event that brings student designers together to build innovative, user-centered solutions. Last year, Rice Design-a-thon had 250+ participants across 56 universities, and we plan on hosting a bigger and better event this year! Enter with a team of up to four participants to design a user-centered product over three days. Participants will also learn from beginner-friendly workshops, network with industry professionals, win cool prizes, and connect with fellow student designers across the country.
