Coaching Myself: Reflection #1 Making Development A Priority It’s been a little over 10 months since taking the reins at BNSF Logistics.?Those of you who follow me know this is the first time I have served as a CEO.?Those of you who know me know that this opportunity exceeded my professional aspirations by a good margin. A few of you, that were instrumental in my professional development 20 years ago, may be a little surprised that this is how my career progressed. ?Rightfully so.?I’ve always needed “a lot of work!” – my mom. I “still do.” – my wife. A primary tenet of our sister company’s Leadership Model is “Making Development a Priority.” BNSF Railway is committed to developing its people and creating a culture of constructive feedback and continuous improvement.?I grew up professionally at BNSF Railway so I don’t know how rare or unique this is.?I just know that I am a product of that development and the efforts/patience of others.?I am forever grateful. According to the Senior Partners at McKinsey and Company, my primary function(s) as a CEO is to 1) Set the direction, 2) Align the organization, 3) Mobilize through leaders, 4) Manage Personal Effectiveness, 5) Engage the Board and 6) Connect with Stakeholders (CEO Excellence, 2022; McKinsey and Company). By watching others, being given the opportunity to lead, receiving feedback and being committed to change, I was ready to tackle 5 out of 6 functions at a proficient level by the time I made the switch to BNSF Logistics.?Again, I thank every leader inside and outside of BNSF Railway that was willing to pour into me along the way. I was watching and listening. Admittedly, “Proficient” is not “expert.”?I’m still growing in all these areas and so many more, but I am committed to making development a priority and a possibility for all those that I serve, just as it was for me.? Along those lines,?I plan to provide a little insight every month into how I’m developing as a senior leader and how I am leading my team to tangibly provide professional development opportunities for those that we serve at BNSF Logistics (Coaching Myself tagline).?Through this series of posts, I'd love to learn from you as well.
