We are thrilled to see the six visionary designs for the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, a place that holds deep meaning for all of us at BNIM—as design practitioners, members of the arts community, and Kansas Citians. For the past 25 years, it has been an honor to help steward and support the Museum’s vision for transformation, growth, and positive impact in the Kansas City arts community. We are excited to see this future expansion continue its enduring legacy, inspiring future generations of art exploration and community connections.
Six designs for the future ? The Nelson-Atkins is thrilled to unveil the proposed designs for the museum’s coming expansion. These visionary designs are the work of six world-class architectural firms (in the order pictured): Kengo Kuma & Associates (Tokyo), Renzo Piano Building Workshop (Genoa), Selldorf Architects (New York), Studio Gang (Chicago), Weiss/Manfredi Architecture (New York), and WHY Architecture (Los Angeles). In its own way, each design presents a more inclusive vision of the Nelson-Atkins — one that offers new and renovated spaces, reimagined cultural experiences, and a commitment to free general admission for generations to come. View these designs in the free exhibition Building Belonging: Designing for the Future of the Nelson-Atkins, on view March 15-June 1 in gallery 113. Additionally, we invite guests to contribute feedback via comment cards in the exhibition. Comments submitted by March 30 will be considered as the museum selects a winning design.
