This unique resurfacing project on I-85 combined traditional paving work with substantial construction and maintenance tasks. Spanning over nine miles, the scope included shoulder reconstruction in two areas, rehabilitation of 60- and 50-inch pipes, PPC overlay on nine bridges, full guardrail replacement, and repainting of two key bridges (Hargrave Rd and the US-52 Flyover). With over 75,000 tons of 9.5D mix and 14,000 tons of ultra-thin asphalt placed, the project stretched across two paving seasons, ensuring quality and safety while minimizing public disruption. Despite challenges such as railroad right-of-entry issues and scope-altering change orders, the team, led by superintendent John Stern and foremen Rafael Lopez and Billy Francis, delivered exceptional results ahead of the deadline. The collaborative efforts of our Area Manager, Jeff Myers, our QC team led by Bradley Isenhour, and support from Ken Wright's Hanes plant and Clarence Pierce’s Greensboro plant were pivotal to the project's success. Special thanks to Deni Kulovic for his outstanding project management and Lisa Gerwe for her administrative support. This project generated vital revenue during the off-season and is a testament to teamwork and perseverance. It’s an honor to nominate this effort for NAPA’s Quality in Construction award.
