    When I met Bryan, he was working the night shift at a Marriott, serving as a rehab counselor, and in school full-time. Bryan was also looking for new opportunities, so I invited him to our office. We hired him on the spot as an admin at our fledgling law firm. Within days, Bryan was promoted to the intake department and quickly became our leader there. For many years, Bryan Benavides was my rock as Price Benowitz LLP grew from 10 lawyers to over 40. At one point, we offered him the chance to run our firm's marketing. But he turned it down, saying he'd rather do operations. So Bryan took over our ops, becoming a driving force behind our continued expansion. Then, about five years ago, Bryan was in a severe motorcycle accident that left him in the ICU. He then spent two months in a rehabilitation facility. When he recovered, Bryan decided to step away from the firm and pursue a new path. There’s a saying that you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and that was certainly the case when Bryan left the firm. We had a very difficult time replacing him. Frankly, it felt impossible. Then a couple of years later, we reconnected. By then, Bryan had started an Executive MBA at Georgetown and was ready for a new challenge. He rejoined me in a fractional capacity as Chief Revenue Officer at BluShark Digital. Since completing his MBA, he’s been leading our growth efforts full-time, and it’s been a joy to work closely again with someone who has had such a profound impact on my professional journey. I don’t know that anybody is truly irreplaceable in a company, but some people are harder to replace than others. Some individuals leave a lasting mark on an organization. Bryan is one of those people.

    After law school,?I landed a Big Law job with a DC firm. But I already knew I was more of an entrepreneur than a lawyer. I liked certain parts about Big Law—making good money and getting to work with incredibly talented people. But if I'm being honest, I wasn’t all that great at being a lawyer. And I certainly wasn't fulfilled. This was the late ‘90s, when the dot-com boom was in full swing. Startups were everywhere. I wanted in. Then in 1998, my college friend Jeremy Kagen was launching a company called EZCD. He asked me to partner up and make a go of it. So in the summer of 1998, I took a leap. I left my Big Law job and moved back into my childhood bedroom in my parents' house in New York. And I joined Jeremy. The idea with EZCD was to give people a way to create custom compilation CDs online. It wasn't a bad idea, and we worked hard on it for a couple years. Then Napster came along— We were screwed. As a business, EZCD failed. And giving up a six-figure salary to move back into my childhood bedroom was very humbling. But I still remember the feeling of freedom when I left that job to start my own thing. That decision to leap was not a failure. It set me on the path I’m on today. And I’ve never regretted it.
