Blue is the new black – A case for Ocean Tech investing On my way back from Stockholm after an insightful #TechArena2025, I couldn't help but reflect on?how much the Ocean Tech space remains overlooked despite its immense potential for disruption and growth. There were a lot of discussions and debates around the current and upcoming VC trends, and how to “hunt the next big thing”. Unsurprisingly, AI continues to dominate the VC landscape, with capital pouring into generative models, AI infrastructure and industry-specific AI solutions that optimize workflows and boost productivity. It’s actually interesting to see a clear shift from broad horizontal AI platforms to?specialized vertical SaaS solutions?tailored to distinct industries. Beyond AI, there is also a clear consensus to focus on technology-driven solutions, such as advanced robotics, telecom satellites, connectivity, digital health and Biotech. Worth also mentioning that Blockchain is back on the agenda with governments and banks worldwide exploring digital securities, asset tokenization or efficiency-boosting applications. Yet, what puzzled me most is how?Ocean Tech remains overlooked despite clear indicators of massive growth potential. ???Here’s why Ocean deserves more?attention : ?? In the past 12 months only, the maritime AI market has seen an explosive expansion, nearly tripling in size to reach $4bn, with projections indicating a CAGR of 20%+ over the next five years. ???AI-powered revenues in sustainable fisheries and aquaculture?shall triple in size by 2030 to reach $1.5bn ???Ocean-derived biotechnology is on track to double in size?by 2030, reaching?$13bn, mainly driven by AI-powered?drug discovery of marine-derived compounds?in pharmaceuticals. ??The global Ocean energy market is set to grow from $1bn in 2024 to over $7bn by 2034, here again with a CAGR exceeding 20%! On my run along the southern tip of Key Biscayne this morning I had some time to reflect on these last days in Miami where we have met investors and gathered the BluKap team. Why is smart money now chasing the opportunity of the ocean? The ocean covers 70% of the planet, produce over 50% of our oxygen and absorbs more than 30% of our CO2 emissions - thus acting as a the ultimate carbon sink. The biodiversity of the ocean is also mind blowing - it’s home to over 80% of all the living organisms of the planet. There’s simply no possible way to disregard the ocean if we are to sustain planetary life as we know it. But the ocean also drives an $3+ trillion global economy in everything from biotechnology to shipping, with immense potential as ocean connectivity and new technologies create completely new opportunities that disrupt the entire ocean economy and create positive change. The oceans really are the ultimate frontier investment opportunity. So while much can he said about the US currently, it’s definitely a place where things tend get done when there’s a willingness to commit, no less so in the ocean space with trailblazers such as Builders Vision and others leading the way. So it was with such great joy I found myself on an impressive Sunreef Yachts on Thursday, in a room filled with serious investors, with serious money and a willingness to invest in the ocean. It is clear to me that the oceans are no longer forgotten, smart money is diving in and it’s happening now.
