On Veterans Day, we honor those who have made the choice to serve our great nation. Military service isn’t mandatory in this country — nor should it be. Except in the most dire emergency, our ideals are best defended by a smaller, totally unified force of highly trained professionals who understand going in what the job entails. Make no mistake: The debt we owe to those willing to accept this awesome bargain on our behalf is more than a paycheck and a handful of meager benefits. We owe them, too, our eternal gratitude for safeguarding the freedoms without which the life to which we are entitled is not possible. Almost 42 million Americans have served in our Armed Forces over the great history of our country. More than 25 million of them are still with us today. That is a remarkable gift for which we can be grateful. In a world of constant change and uncertainty, we can know with certainty that today America is free, secure, and prosperous because of the gift of their service. So today we honor all those who gave their lives and all those who have risked their lives so that our nation might remain free. And we honor, of course, all those who at this very moment are standing watch for freedom and security from our bases across the United States and around the world. With a spirit of pride and gratitude, let us recall their heroic accomplishments and thank them for their unselfish devotion to duty.
