???? Optimistic Insights on EV Battery Value Retention ???? A recent report from P3 Group sheds light on the long-term value retention of electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and the findings are encouraging. Analyzing data from over 7,000 vehicles, P3 reveals that during the initial 30,000 kilometers, battery capacity experiences a more rapid decline, dropping from 100% to around 95%. However, the good news emerges as mileage increases: the State of Health (SoH) stabilizes, with a SoH of approximately 90% at 100,000 kilometers. Beyond this point, the degradation trend flattens significantly, maintaining an impressive SoH of nearly 87% between 200,000 and 300,000 kilometers—well above the 70-80% threshold typically covered by battery warranties. Arguably, P4 states that "remodeling" a battery for second-life applications can increase the residual value. In reality, the less labor is factored into the transfer of batteries from first-life application to second, the more value can be preserved. And this trend will continue with the falling prices per kWh and raising labor costs. On Monday, President-elect Donald J. Trump appointed former Wisconsin congressman and Fox Business host Sean Duffy to lead the Transportation Department. If you've been closely following the recent news of former Fox personalities being nominated to the new administration, you may have overlooked an important update from the current Department of Transportation (DOT) regarding its compliance guidelines for battery shipping. The DOT has published a revised set of guidelines to help shippers safely package lithium cells and batteries for transport by all modes, in accordance with the latest (May 10, 2024; HM-215Q) regulatory requirements. While the high-profile personnel changes may have grabbed the headlines, this compliance update is arguably the more significant development of the week for businesses involved in the transportation of lithium-based batteries. The link to the full document is in the comments. #DOTCompliance #BatteryShipping #LithiumBatteries #HazardousMaterials #Transportation

BETA TECHNOLOGIES has successfully completed its first test flight of an aircraft produced on their assembly line in Vermont. As the demand for electric engines accelerates in the aviation and marine industries, we’re witnessing a transformative shift, much like what we’ve seen in the automotive sector. The maturation of the battery cell market, along with the development of second-life applications and recycling, is paving the way for a sustainable future. At Bluewater, we are proud to support this innovation with reverse logistics for second-life batteries, ensuring that these valuable resources are reused and recycled responsibly. Together, we can power the next generation of electric flight while promoting sustainability. #Sustainability #ElectricAviation #BatteryRecycling #BetaTechnologies #Innovation

Volkswagen and Audi are both building EV charging hubs, using second-life EV batteries, as well as pre-production new batteries from manufacturing. Interestingly, Tesla is taking a different route, manufacturing BESS they brand Megapacks, adding about 10% to their revenue in 2024. The market for second-life batteries is developing just as fast the battery market itself, and consists not only of the end-of-life EV batteries repurposed for less demanding applications, but also of new batteries from manufacturing. With frequent changes of technology and product design, projects cancelled or overstocked, there are many ways perfectly new batteries come to the second-life market - and with diverse options for the next application. #batteries #cleanenergy #EVs

Celebrating Sustainability: The Battery Reuse & Recycling Yacht Party Last Friday, we had the pleasure of hosting the Battery Reuse & Recycling Yacht Party aboard the beautiful Sailing Yacht Tamsen in Marina Del Rey. Our valued partners and friends joined us for an unforgettable evening dedicated to celebrating our collective efforts in reusing, repurposing, and responsibly recycling batteries. Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to the success of this event - Sophia Sparks, David Bliss, Andrew Eyerman, Yufu Cheng, Forrest North, Tim Karimov, it was great to have you onboard ! Your commitment to sustainable practices inspires us all. The link to more photos is in the comments below.

“Finding new life for used batteries will significantly reduce pollution and our reliance on other nations, while lowering costs and supporting the clean energy transition,”?said?U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. We fully agree, but with one tweak - not "will" but already DOES! Bluewater has already repurposed millions of batteries, and see a strong market and many new entrants in the field.

Researchers at the Center for Strategic and International Studies calculated that Chinese government support for the battery and EV sector totaled $230 billion from 2009 to 2023. The consensus in the US has been that the lithium batteries manufacturing may be dominated by China, but the fundamental research and inventions (like the invention of a lithium-ion battery) is still owned by the USA. This may not be true anymore. This Carnegie Endowment for International Peace article by Varun Sivaram,?Noah J. Gordon,?and?Dan Helmeci says the US research has fallen dangerously behind the "world leader" (!). Close to 70% of research papers in the battery space are coming from China today. There are new solid state batteries in the making, potentially replacing the LIB in EVs and other applications requiring high-energy density, and the USA can still win the race, if it does not insist on playing a catch-up game with China in the li-ion space, which it can not possibly win, and bet on newer tech instead. "Any attempt by the United States to catch up with Chinese manufacturers of today’s lithium-ion batteries will require enormously expensive subsidies to produce a commodity product with slim margins, and China’s cost advantage is virtually insurmountable. Maintaining the political will to fund an indefinitely uncompetitive industry would be taxing." says the article.
