Working tirelessly to build a better way to deliver behavioral health care.

Can mental health tech be saved with clinicians in leadership roles? This question took center stage at the HIMSS Pre-Conference Behavioral Health Forum, where I joined a powerhouse panel alongside with Dr. Jessica Jackson (Mental Health America), Kay Nikiforova (Violet) and David Cooper, PsyD (Therapist in Tech) to explore the intersection of behavioral health, technology, and clinical leadership. Key Takeaways: The American Psychological Association's (APA) advocacy efforts: ?? The APA has partnered with CMS to co-lead the development of digital mental health technology codes ?? Advocating to expand code definitions to include behavioral health technology products ?? Engaging the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regarding concerns about the proliferation and use of generative AI chatbots in mental health with no regulatory oversight ?? Updating the APA's Ethics Code to address ethical uses of AI and technology ?? The APA's Mental Health Technology Advisory Committee guidelines development for AI use in mental health care The Role of Clinicians in Tech Clinicians bring invaluable expertise to behavioral health innovation, including: ?? Critical thinking & program evaluation ?? Ethics, EDI (equity, diversity, inclusion), & research expertise ?? Team-building & cross-disciplinary collaboration ?? But challenges remain: Balancing ROI vs. quality care and navigating the cultural shift from clinical to tech settings. The future of behavioral health tech depends on clinicians-turned-leaders who can bridge the gap between patient-centered care and scalable, sustainable innovation. Cheers to Solome Tibebu Behavioral Health Tech and HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition for hosting such an engaging and informative convening! #BehavioralHealthTech #MentalHealthInnovation #HIMSS #EthicalAI #Blueprint

Will clinicians in leadership roles save mental healthtech? Today at HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition, Dr. Jessica Jackson (Mental Health America), Dylan Ross, PhD (Blueprint), Kay Nikiforova (Violet), & David Cooper, PsyD (Therapists in Tech) addressed the perceived chasm between academic psychology and the fast-paced demands of the healthtech sector and how clinicians can serve as critical leaders to unite these worlds.

As AI continues to transform behavioral health, viewing it through a single lens - whether as a diagnostic tool, administrative assistant, or clinical decision-maker - oversimplifies its true role (and potential) in care delivery. A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine sparked discussion among mental health clinicians on this topic, prompting Dylan Ross, PhD, Head of Clinical at Blueprint, to frame AI’s role as a continuum: “Applications of AI in care delivery are many, and can range from augmentation - where it assists clinicians - to automation, where it makes independent decisions, removing the clinician from the loop.” Let’s start with the augmentation end of the continuum - the use of AI as an assistant has extraordinary potential to enhance how care is delivered: removing administrative burdens and reducing burnout among clinicians. When provided with the assistance from an AI tool, clinicians remain fully in charge of decision-making, but have the benefit of AI-surfaced insights as suggestions. This increased efficiency creates more time and opportunities for clinicians to focus on patient care, and ultimately boost clinical expertise. The risk of full automation, however, is significant. A recent study of automation bias in AI-driven clinical decision support systems further underscores these risks. Over-reliance on AI, like omission and commission errors, can erode clinical expertise by assuming AI is always correct, compromise patient safety by following AI-generated recommendations despite conflicting evidence, and even degrade AI performance itself, as unchecked reliance on automation reduces the quality of clinician input that AI systems depend on for continuous learning. In short, in care delivery contexts, we must ensure that AI remains an assistant - enhancing, not replacing, clinical expertise. The value that AI has when applied as an assistant is immense, and is worth continued efforts to improve. Clinicians should always remain in the driver’s seat, leveraging AI as a tool for efficiency and insight, but never as an unquestioned authority. How do you see AI shaping the future of behavioral health? Let’s discuss. https://lnkd.in/gY4Bt3fw

Therapists in communities impacted by the extreme weather events in recent months can attest: the mental health impact is clear and devastating. In fact, a recent study found that in areas affected by a natural disaster the number of individuals diagnosed with anxiety and depression jumped a staggering 42%. What has been far less visible is how these events are affecting those who are watching from a distance. To help therapy clients build resilience and cope with the stress of extreme weather events, wherever they may be, we’re sharing some helpful evidence-based strategies.

Why does new tech have such a hard time scaling in healthcare, especially when the potential benefits are so enormous? Do patients want to be treated by robots? Is the goal to remove humans from the equation? How should founders think about interacting with the healthcare "tech stack"? We'd been wrestling with these questions for a while, so we reached out to Danny Freed at Blueprint for input. Danny's app-based platform for mental health therapists has taken off like wildfire; unsurprisingly, his insight helped us to completely reframe our questions around tech adoption in healthcare.
