Scientific research fuels advancements and innovation in veterinary medicine, promoting medical excellence and helping us fulfill our purpose: #ABetterWorldForPets. To help train clinicians and clinician-scientists within our family of practices on conducting and publishing research, BluePearl Pet Hospital hosted a two-day intensive program on topics including developing a research question, how to collect and analyze data, and how to write a scientific paper. Veterinary residents and interns from BluePearl and VCA Animal Hospitals participated in the program, with mentorship support provided by VCA and Mars Veterinary Health research leaders. Our Lafayette, CO, hospital is currently enrolling dogs who are experiencing symptoms of acute onset of pancreatitis (vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort) in a study evaluating the safety and effectiveness of a medication conditionally approved by the FDA. Dogs will be randomly assigned either study medication or placebo. All study-related care is funded by the sponsor (exams, diagnostics, hospitalization, rechecks, study medication). At BluePearl, we provide our teams with learning opportunities to grow their knowledge and gain experience in new areas of medicine to help them follow their unique passions. After attending an advanced endoscopy lab last year, April Williams, DVM, at our Nashville, TN, hospital has performed more than 20 endoscopies, showcasing the impact of advanced training on veterinary care. Minimally invasive procedures like endoscopy allow us to avoid surgery when possible, providing better outcomes for patients. Dr. Williams shared, "As an emergency doctor, I primarily perform endoscopy on patients with gastric or esophageal foreign bodies. Our very first endoscopy patient was an older, small breed dog that ingested a sewing needle. We also had an owner come to our hospital at the beginning of a snowstorm because their pet ingested a sock. " She added, "Being able to help a patient with an esophageal foreign body without transferring to another hospital is a blessing." To fellow veterinarians considering pursuing advanced training in endoscopy, Dr. Williams advises, "Absolutely pursue it. As its World Antimicrobial Awareness Week I have created an article to discuss the importance of auditing and measuring antibiotic use ( AMU) . It's a very important component of stewardship and I have been delighted to see across Mars Veterinary Health work on AMU assessments is well underway - some of this work been published (see article for references) . There are different metrics you can use to measure AMU and your choice may be determined purely by which data set you can obtain consistently. The pros and cons of each metric are discussed in the article, as can affect how you interpret the data. Most importantly for me, is starting the process of AMU assessments within your hospital. Understandably these discussions must be undertaken in a constructive and non judgemental manner, they are an opportunity to review new guidance and learn from colleagues. Science and medicine continually evolves, as a consequence recommendations on how to use antibiotics optimally will also change, regular AMU discussions are a great opportunity to review your current practice but also how impactful the changes you have made have been . #onehealth #AntimicrobialResistance #AMR #Banfield #VCA #BluePearl #Linneaus #Anicura #mountpleasent
