This week, Nike announced a collaboration with Kim Kardashian's shapewear brand SKIMS that?is a continuation of the diversification strategy that has served them well since their founding in 1971. Clearly Nike started its dominance thanks to running shoes in the 1970s and then it quickly added basketball shoes in 1972. Along the way they had a deliberate expansion strategy that used footwear as the "toehold" in a market that allowed them to then move into apparel and equipment. Compare that to Reebok who also had innovative ideas (remember The Pump?) but expanded from their initial market of aerobic shoes in a less focused way into things like John Frye Boots and Boston Whaler Boats. The result? Based on recent financial reports, Nike's revenue is 25x larger than that of Reebok. Want to grow?
