???????? Why are remote offices accessible offices? I was diagnosed with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) in my late 20s, but started experiencing symptoms when I was 17. ME/CFS is my most debilitating condition but I find it impossible to explain its impact. It’s not being tired - it doesn’t get better with rest. It’s a full body, walking-through-sludge heaviness. Mental blackout fog. Too tired to sleep. Impossible to overcome feeling. When working in an office, I’ve: ?? Felt like I was falling asleep while driving ?? Booked conference rooms or slept in my car during lunch ?? Had to nap for 2 hours to recover after work ?? Embarrassingly excused myself from an in-person meeting because I was falling asleep after working through all day meetings ?? Spent team lunches sleeping in my hotel room instead of eating Walking to meetings, lunch with coworkers, sitting up at a desk, driving in rush hour, having to get ready in the morning, just having to be “on” all day … feels like endless marathons. Being in an office or traveling for work with no say over my schedule puts my own health at risk. Driving without control over my schedule puts other peoples’ lives at risk, too. While being at home doesn’t alleviate the symptoms completely, it allows me to better manage them. I can: ?? Sleep in instead of sitting in traffic, allowing for more “good” hours ?? Nap in my bed for more productive rest ?? Avoid the drain of fully getting ready, walking to meetings, etc. ?? Work horizontally, from a couch, during infusions treatments… whatever I need to get through a day of normal “adulting” The good news is, I work in digital marketing. I can literally do my job from anywhere, making remote work a *reasonable* accommodation. The bad news is, there are still companies that don’t understand I can do my job from anywhere, making remote work a *reasonable* accommodation. While I’ve seen people with disabilities accommodated with remote work, it’s typically after they’ve already been with the company for a while. ??
