In a speed-dating experiment, syncing participants' smiles increased romantic attraction. Not at all surprising, but the study is noteworthy because the manipulations were done in real-time, without people knowing. Maybe this tech has legitimate uses. But the ratio of research on AI capabilities to consequences feels woefully lopsided. How irreparably damaged will our trust in technology be when people realize their "authentic" interactions were manipulated for effect? How jarring will uncalibrated in-person interactions feel to those who "adapt" to such technology? Most people probably don't want technology to puppeteer their social interactions (let alone interact with people passing off these manipulations as authentic).
