If You Want to Experience More Pleasure in Life, Do Hard Things. One of the most important findings in neuroscience is that pain and pleasure are co-located in the brain. This part of the brain acts like a seesaw, with pain and pleasure on opposite sides. Pain and pleasure are both stresses on the body. The body prefers to be in equilibrium, or a neutral state. When we experience extremes of either pain or pleasure, the body works towards equilibrium through a counteracting force on the opposite side of the seesaw. If we experience too much pleasure, the body works to rebalance the seesaw by introducing pain. If we experience too much pain, the body works to rebalance by introducing pleasure. This is why a 20-minute exercise or a 2-minute cold plunge can have lasting "feel good" effects for the rest of the day. This is also why social media scrolling for 2 hours leaves us feeling depressed and isolated. We can leverage this biological mechanism to our advantage by doing hard things first thing in the morning. We can also limit activities that provide short-term pleasure that don't require work. The more we can set up our lives to experience friction and hard work prior to reward and pleasure, the more stable our emotional state and the more energy we will have. Dr. Anna Lembke's Pain and Pleasure Seesaw

Burn Out, Distraction, Low Productivity? Working on fewer projects and incorporating cold exposure may be the answer. More than ever in our history, people are feeling burned out, distracted, and unproductive in the workplace. Technology has enhanced collaboration but, at the same time, it fragments our attention. We are dominated by our email inboxes, slack pings, and social media feeds, prevented from focusing on strategy and impact. Cal Newport, author of Deep Work and Slow Productivity, claims we have lost the ability to focus on deep work that actually moves the needle in our businesses, careers, and relationships. Too many projects, too many meetings, too many competing priorities. We are on Zoom all day, adding more administrative overhead, talking about the work we need to do, without actually getting that work done during the day. We are then forced to take that work home, cram in extra hours at a diminishing return, and compromise our rest and recovery. This overwhelming workload leads to chronic stress and inefficiency. So what’s the answer? Counterintuitively, focusing on fewer projects at once can increase our effectiveness, allowing us to give more attention to each and carry them to completion before taking on new tasks. Counterintuitively, routines that enhance our cognitive recovery and focus, like cold plunging, are beneficial. Counterintuitively, less is more. We must work hard and recover even harder. Focus is the heart of strategy. Deep work on key initiatives that drive the most results is a competitive advantage in a distracted, burned out world.

Rather than embracing burn out culture in startups and corporations: Adderall and stimulants, endless late nights, working 100 hour weeks, companies are better off embracing wellness routines. Working out together, nutrition optimization, cold exposure therapy, and sauna use can keep the team highly motivated, energized, and performing. Compounded over the long run, why sacrifice your health when you can have your cake (making money) and eat it too (health).
