It was wonderful to host our fellow members of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance community at Blue Ocean Gear!

When it comes to ghost gear, it seems that most organization treat symptoms, but the source of it. Ghost gear is fishing gear that is lost and keeps catching fish and is not able to be harvested. Therefore, ghost gear hurts harvesters and the ecosystem. Sustainable Fisheries Partnership is taking a comprehensive approach by not only supporting clean-ups and recycling, but also by supporting the prevention of ghost gear. We commend them and look forward to working together with partners to implement a system of success for ocean stakeholders.

At Blue Ocean Gear, we couldn't think of a better way to honor these days than by getting our team out on the water for a paddle right outside our office in beautiful Sausalito, CA. World Oceans Day reminds us of the critical role our oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. It's a day to reflect on the importance of preserving our marine environments and to take action towards protecting our blue planet. (On the other hand, National Donut Day is a delightful celebration of everyone's favorite sweet treat. Originating in 1938, this day honors the "Donut Lassies" of the Salvation Army who served donuts to soldiers during World War I) Our team at Blue Ocean Gear is taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the ocean while enjoying some delicious donuts. It's a perfect opportunity to bond, reflect on our mission to innovate ocean gear, and enjoy the stunning views of the San Francisco Bay. The Global Ghost Gear Initiative recently hosted its Annual Meeting, with stakeholders from all over the world including representatives from the fishing industry, seafood companies, governments, NGO’s, and fishing tech companies, including our CEO Kortney Opshaug. Lost fishing gear, also referred to as ghost gear, is one of the most lethal forms of marine debris as it results in staggering losses of marine life, from small fish to seabirds to marine mammals. The discussions led by the GGGI on ways to tackle this issue through education, cleanup, and prevention are critical on the path for elimination of this problem forever. Blue Ocean Gear has been a leader in enabling fishing fleets to address ghost gear using our Smart Buoy tracking technology to prevent gear loss, and we will continue to be part of these global efforts as we all work toward ghost gear-free oceans. #ghostgear #sustainablefishing #SDG14 #oceantech

Blue Ocean Gear was highlighted as a gear manufacturer at SFP's Bycatch Solutions Showcase at Seafood Expo North America/Seafood Processing North America a few weeks ago. Ryan Lind of Blue Ocean Gear tracked one of the company’s smart buoys and demonstrated how its technology could be used to trace traps that drift off. Paired with traditional gear, it can also prevent “ghost gear,” or a lost apparatus that may then catch a whale or sea turtle, injuring or killing them, and alert fishers when traps might move into areas that are closed because of whale migration. ecoRI News with the story ?? https://lnkd.in/d5pKdzPb
