?? NEWS: A new investigation by?Greenpeace UK?reveals that giant supertrawlers continue to catch vast quantities of fish from the UK’s marine protected areas?? ? Investigators found that from January 2020 to January 2025, 26 supertrawlers collectively spent nearly 37,000 hours fishing?in 44 of the UK’s offshore MPAs. The majority of the supertrawlers?were foreign flagged and selling most of their catch overseas, leaving little economic benefit to the UK. ?? ? Supertrawlers destructive industrial fishing methods affect the health and resilience of the marine environment, including the fish stocks available to the UK’s struggling small-scale fishing fleet.? ? Yesterday, Blue Marine and our legal partners, Richard Buxton Solicitors and counsel David Wolfe KC and Brendon Moorhouse, took the government to court for allowing decades of overfishing. Our small-scale fishing fleet is on its knees and our fish populations are in free fall. ?? Brexit has been a failure for our inshore fishing fleet, who were promised that leaving the EU would mean taking back control of our waters and revising the allocation of fishing quotas. To date, the UK Government is still licensing over 16,000 foreign vessels to fish in our coastal waters. The great UK fishing scandal was entirely avoidable, but our government chose not to follow scientific advice. ? LEGAL CASE UPDATE: Today, we take the government to court with Richard Buxton Solicitors!?? ? In March 2024, we issued legal proceedings to take the government to court. Today, our legal team challenges the government for allowing decades of overfishing.? ? While we don’t know what the outcome will be for some time, the aim of the case is to reform fisheries management at a government level – with the aim to support thriving coastal communities and the recovery of our marine life.? ? ???GOOD NEWS: An international coalition is launching the?'Rewilding Dogger Bank Programme'?to restore the ecological heart of the?North Sea.? The Dogger Bank is an area which covers 2.5 million hectares across UK, Dutch and German waters and faces severe threats from industrial fishing, energy extraction and shipping. The collaborative project to rewild this vital marine ecosystem, which supports a vast array of marine life, including sharks, rays, seals and seabirds is funded by the Endangered Landscapes & Seascapes Programme. Together, we will work to safeguard this important marine nursery for future generations.
