Back in the field for a walk down.
I was thinking the other day that there aren't that many exciting photos for us electrical folks until someone lets the magic smoke out. But for my fellow geeks (because you can't spell geek without a EE), I present a 4160 V motor starter with a Multilin 869 protection relay.

Chasing ghosts.
This almost certainly seems to be some kind of single line to ground fault on the distribution system where the B phase voltage and load current drops to zero for 5-6 cycles. The subsequent 3 second voltage dip is intriguing. Kind of makes me wonder about a surge arrestor operation or maybe a rodent that cooked all the way through then fell off. Again the VFDs compensated on the unfaulted phases to keep the DC bus charged and the motors running. #vfd #vfds #metering #powerquality

Fun with VFDs. Apparently a minor voltage dip that is as short as a single cycle can cause the VFD to miss a pulse. This example went all of 3 cycles. #powerquality #metering #variablefrequencydrive

Sobering reminder of what we're playing with.
Someone mixed up the line and load sides so when the electrician opened the breaker and put his ratchet on the "load" side cables he got a face full of fire. He's dealing with some 2nd degree burns on his face but seems to have come through it ok. I suggested he mount this in a display case with his melted PPE.
