Some employees are simply not being paid enough to care about results. But that’s not all! Caring about results frequently requires an extra investment in energy and time. Doing the hard thing instead of the easy thing. Challenging other team members. Debates and conflict. All these things manifest themselves in extra hours at work and less hours at home, or at least in increased mental exhaustion. It’s perfectly understandable for an underpaid person to say to themselves: “You know what? I’m going to do just enough to get by! This is not worth it!”. But careful: ========== I’ve seen highly paid - and I mean really highly paid - professionals, who didn’t care about results either, doing just enough to get by. So money is a necessary key motivator, but it’s not sufficient! Check pay, but then also look at other factors: Have people ‘given up’ on co-creating success with you, because it’s impossible to satisfy the perfectionist in you? If you’re a manager, look at how well you have been doing on inspiring a shared vision! Do people even have any image of where this road is leading, and how is that even compelling for them? Have you done a good enough job providing clarity about the one most important goal, and how sure are you *really* that your team knows and understands this goal? Are individuals put to do a job that neither matches their talents or passions? Are you getting fake commitments as a consequence of suppressing debate? What other factors can you think of?
