Colours have led hydrogen and its derivative molecules (eg ammonia) astray - BIG TIME. In some small part because they have removed the focus from CO2 intensity to non-scientific language. But the bigger problem they have caused is fixed cut off points in CO2 intensity for 'green' and 'blue' hydrogen. Furthermore, these CO2 intensity cut off points are rather arbitrary. Perhaps they were meant to be based on some perception of best available technology... but after hours of debate in policy making discussion who really knows why the numbers are what they are. The plain truth is that they force new projects into an awkward corner of 'perfection' to hit the target. That corner is the most expensive place to be. The result - no business case, no project, no progress. The vision of the 'perfect' has killed the 'good'. The 'blue' cut off also does nothing to incentivise incremental retrofit decarbonisation of existing assets such as ammonia plants and SMRs. In these processes, around 60% of CO2 emissions (unfortunately not enough to get the 'blue' badge) are either already captured and blown to atmosphere (ammonia) or could be captured and sequestered at low cost (SMR). Let's celebrate 60% CO2 emissions reduction as a good start. If you truly love the colours, thing of it as 'light blue' hydrogen or ammonia. Come on... consider all the SMRs out there (about 2,000) and grey ammonia plants. Is the world rich enough to build them all again from scratch as new green and blue ammonia plants? I think not. Debt is a huge problem for many nations. Decarbonisation is falling down the agenda while priorities as defence and energy security rise rapidly to the top. We need a new approach. We need a more realistic approach. We must get meaningful decarbonisation done this decade and early in the next decade so that we have a planet left to wave by the time the 'perfect' solutions can come into play, eg from 2040 onwards. Green ammonia? Will it compete in the next 10 to 15 years, given that grey ammonia production already captures most of the CO2 generated within the process? This CO2 can be sequestered at the lowest unit cost of any industrial CO2 emissions. Let's start ammonia decarbonisation here. And if we do... new green ammonia plants and on-purpose new blue ammonia capacity will have to get in the queue for large scale deployment. Perhaps you disagree. That's OK with me. Anyhow, come and join the debate this week at ACI's European Green Ammonia summit in Düsseldorf. Perhaps Active Communications International (ACI Europe) will regret inviting me to make my presentation and chair day 2 of their green ammonia event, when they realise the implications of the message I will bring. Or perhaps the delegates will begin realise why they are struggling to get their green ammonia projects through FID and realise that a pivot may be required to decarbonise ammonia. Let's see.

In our pursuit of sustainable energy solutions, it's essential to examine innovative yet proven technologies like Steam Methane Reforming (SMR). Here's why we believe SMR holds immense promise: 1?? Abundant Feedstock: SMR utilizes methane, the primary component of natural gas, as its feedstock. With ample natural gas reserves globally, SMR offers a readily available and cost-effective pathway to produce hydrogen, a crucial clean energy carrier. 2?? Carbon Capture Potential: While SMR traditionally emits carbon dioxide as a byproduct, advancements in carbon capture and utilization (CCU) technologies offer the potential to mitigate these emissions. Captured CO2 can be utilized in various industrial processes or permanently stored underground, contributing to greenhouse gas reduction efforts. 3?? Infrastructure Compatibility: SMR facilities can leverage existing natural gas infrastructure, including pipelines and storage facilities. This compatibility streamlines the integration of SMR into the existing energy landscape, facilitating rapid deployment and market penetration. 4?? Grid Balancing: Hydrogen produced through SMR can serve as a versatile energy storage medium, aiding in grid stability and renewable energy integration. By storing excess renewable energy as hydrogen, SMR supports the transition to a more resilient and low-carbon energy system. 5?? Industrial Applications: Beyond energy production, hydrogen derived from SMR finds widespread use in various industrial sectors, including refining, chemicals, and transportation. Its versatility as a clean fuel and feedstock positions SMR as a cornerstone technology for decarbonizing industrial processes. 6?? Innovation Hub: Continued research and development in SMR technology promise further efficiency improvements and emissions reductions. Investing in SMR innovation not only drives sustainability goals but also fosters economic growth and technological advancement. By embracing Steam Methane Reforming technology, we can unlock a cleaner, more sustainable energy future while addressing global energy challenges. Let's harness the potential of SMR to build a resilient and low-carbon energy ecosystem! ???? #SMR #Ammonia #Hydrogen #CleanEnergy #Sustainability #Innovation

At a time when many of its Big Oil peers are reworking targets for new energy growth, Chevron has stuck with its plans to reach 150,000 tons per year of equity #hydrogen capacity by 2030. Significant additional work and substantial government incentives will be required to deliver that target. But the major has several promising irons in the fire at this early stage of the game, including its partnership in two of the seven U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-selected #hydrogenhubs, a "unicorn" hydrogen production/storage play in Utah, and a waste-to-hydrogen project that offers small initial volumes of carbon-negative hydrogen to serve California's transport market. Curiously, Chevron's initial hydrogen project list carries quite a lot of exposure to #greenhydrogen for a company that professes to be uninterested in renewable power as part of its low-carbon strategy.?But these projects share a common theme: they all sit at the cross-section of generous fiscal incentives, geographic advantage and well defined end-uses. And yes, Chevron does still expect most of the needle-moving scale in its emerging hydrogen business to come from #bluehydrogen. Crucially, the biggest projects on its current project list -- the two hydrogen hubs -- would not be eligible for #45V US federal hydrogen production tax credits under the current guidelines, including the fully green Arches scheme. Chevron and its hub partners have been among the 30,000 commenters on the Treasury's tax guidance here and have noted what's at stake. For now, these incentives are make-or-break.
