Earth Month is typically one of the busiest times of the year for those of us who work on sustainability and the climate. As we near the end of April, here’s a loving reminder to get outside and enjoy the thing we’re all working so hard to protect. Here’s a photo of Moji from earlier this month where she spent a day in the daffodil fields shortly after peak bloom during the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.?? This spring, you’ll likely find her taking long bike rides, tending to her garden, and exploring new hiking trails around Washington.

King County Solid Waste Division has a goal to achieve Zero Waste of Resources by 2030, with a priority focus on waste prevention and reuse. Over the past few months, we worked in collaboration with Cascadia Consulting Group to develop a Bring Your Own Cup (BYOC) campaign in unincorporated King County. We built relationships with independently-owned cafes and coffee shops White Center, Vashon, Skyway, and a bunch of other small communities sprinkled in between cities. We encouraged them to invite their customers to reduce waste by bringing their own cup. Through this campaign, we successfully engaged with 34 businesses in unincorporated King County. The relationships we fostered allowed us to more deeply understand the regional barriers and challenges that exist for businesses around reuse and customers bringing their own cup. Some interesting things we noticed:? ? all 34 of the businesses we connect with allow their customers to BYOC! ? only 7 offered some kind of discount to their customers? ? there are A LOT of drive-thru coffee stands which offers unique conditions as compared to coffee shops with more space for customers ? most businesses had very positive reactions to customers who wanted to BYOC but also weren’t actively promoting this as an option ? it’s important that customers bring *clean* travel cups and know what size drink will fit inside their cup Keep an eye out for more coffee spots in King County inviting you to BYOC like Dubsea Coffee in White Center who offers FIFTY CENTS off!
