Double materiality is a concept that recognizes that sustainability issues can have both financial and non-financial impacts on an organization and its stakeholders. It means that an organization should consider not only how sustainability issues affect its financial performance and value creation, but also how its activities and outputs affect the environment and society as well as reputation. Double materiality has become a regulatory requirement for many companies that are headquartered or do business in the European Union. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which came into force January 1, 2024, for 2025 reporting, will require companies to disclose information on both the financial and non-financial impacts of sustainability issues, using a common set of standards and indicators. As part of these requirements, companies must conduct a double materiality assessment to determine the material sustainability issues for their business and their stakeholders.?? Our firm can help you to conduct a double materiality assessment. We have extensive experience and expertise in conducting materiality assessments for a wide range of clients and sectors. If you are interested in learning more about double materiality and how we can help you with it, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website for more information.? Earlier this week, I was joined by Andrew Watterson and Claire Greenlees, MS at the 2024 Ohio Energy Conference in Columbus, OH. It was a great event with good discussions on topics ranging from #ElectricVehicles to #CommunitySolar to #Agrivoltaics. Some of our favorite panels and takeaways include the following: ---Northeast Ohio Energy Projects, Investments and Innovations: Representing our own home region, Emily K. and Sarah E. O'Keeffe shared exciting updates on how companies in #Cleveland are embracing clean energy and energy efficiency in #NortheastOhio. It is truly inspiring to see our city leading the charge in embracing clean energy solutions as well as developing technologies that benefit the environment and communities. ---Re-Branding Efficiency in Ohio: John Seryak, CEO of Go Sustainable Energy, LLC, emphasized the importance of visiting the locations in which energy efficiency projects need to take place to foster open communication about efficiency initiatives. By encouraging open dialogue, organizations can identify practical solutions to drive meaningful improvements across facilities. ---Community Solar’s Future in Ohio: Led by Geoff Greenfield, panelists Kaitlin Kelly O'Neill and Myria Williams discussed the latest updates on legislation that would bring community solar to Ohio. Community solar allows residents and businesses to benefit from solar energy without needing individual installations, making clean energy more accessible across communities. We look forward to continuing these conversations with our colleagues in the sustainability space going forward and working together to move Ohio towards a cleaner, brighter, and more just low-carbon economy. #Ohio #OhioEnergyConference2024 #Renewables #Solar #Wind #EnergyEfficiency #CommunitySolar #Sustainability?#EVs

We had a great time connecting with and learning from colleagues at the Ohio Energy Conference hosted by the Energy Coalition of Ohio at COSI - Center of Science and Industry in Columbus, OH these past two days. Blue CSR's Founder and President, Andrew Watterson, moderated a panel on the future of EV infrastructure. Panelists Rap Hankins, Steve Sumner, and Ben Morris provided valuable insights on the installation and accessibility of EV?charging stations and the pressing need for a comprehensive and reliable EV infrastructure that serves all communities. Key takeaways from the panel included: ----Building Equity into Infrastructure and Policy: It is crucial to ensure that equity and justice are integral to the development of EV infrastructure and policy. By prioritizing accessibility, charging solutions can be made available to all communities which further addresses disparities in EV adoption. ----Overcoming Barriers to Adoption: Addressing both “charging anxiety” and “range anxiety” are key for the future of EVs. By tackling these mental and physical barriers, consumer confidence can be strengthened in addition to facilitating a broader acceptance of EVs as a reliable alternative. ----Educating Future Generations: Informing younger generations about the opportunities and value in pursuing green-economy jobs in the transportation sector is essential. Promoting trade and vocational programs as viable alternatives to traditional four-year degrees will be vital?in securing a skilled workforce to push forward the EV market. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the panelists and attendees for contributing to such a meaningful dialogue! We are excited to carry these insights forward as we continue to advocate for sustainable energy solutions that help communities thrive! #OhioEnergyConference2024 #ElectricVehicles #EV #EnergyInnovation #Sustainability?

You may have heard about the staff at the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) threatening to “mutiny” this past spring when SBTi’s board approved a plan to allow companies to offset greenhouse gas emissions from their supply chain with carbon credits without the input of the organization’s technical teams. Several staff members asked for the CEO to step down. Since then, SBTi seems to be taking steps to “right the ship,” to keep this pirate analogy going. SBTi announced in May it would be revising its Corporate Net Zero Standard next year, and CEO Luiz Amaral stepped down in July, citing “personal reasons.” As part of its plans to revise its Standard, SBTi released a few weeks ago 4 sets of research papers on “considerations for a more effective approach to Scope 3 emissions.” For those of you who are less familiar with SBTi, you might be wondering why their internal bickering about carbon offsets is so concerning to the rest of the sustainability world. The reason is that SBTi has become the go-to standard for third-party verification of net zero targets. So, their methodology for determining how to set and achieve net zero emissions will play a huge role in whether companies meaningfully make progress towards net zero.? And SBTi’s research papers indicate the organization will still likely exclude offsets for Scope 3 emissions, which will make it challenging even for climate-ambitious companies to meet its Net-Zero Standard because it requires reducing emissions in supply chains that are often out of companies’ direct control. Margaret Morales wrote in a Trellis piece recently she worries companies in the coming years will either withdraw from the program or just never sign up.? Link to SBTi’s research papers: https://lnkd.in/epK7JC6C? ? We’ll be keeping abreast of SBTi’s updates to its Corporate Net-Zero Standard as we help clients navigate the SBTi process. Please reach out to us at [email protected] if your company is navigating or considering navigating target setting and/or the SBTi verification process.?? ? #SBTi #Emissions #Target #Climate #Scope3 #Sustainability #ESG #CorporateResponsibility?
