Are you working in a toxic culture? The foundation of culture is the top leader’s values. If the culture is toxic, the top leader’s values created the toxic culture OR allowed it to happen. If they didn’t like it, they would change it by improving or removing the toxic people within the organization. They always have this option. If they’re ok with it, it’s not going to change. However, if someone is working in a toxic culture, they are responsible for improving their own situation by removing themselves from the organization. I’m often asked, “Why do some leaders treat their team members so poorly?” It’s simple, because those team members choose to show up and continue working for those toxic leaders. If someone finds themselves in a toxic culture and feel they have no choice but to keep working there, that very thought is THE problem. If we feel we don’t have a choice, it’s our fault…not our leader’s fault. We must intentionally develop ourselves and methodically make choices that will move us in the right direction. The good news is that we come fully loaded with an unlimited supply of choices (good and bad). Blaming others is a choice. Taking responsibility is a choice. Blame is also the most popular excuse. In other words, my circumstances are someone else’s fault. If I think it’s someone else’s fault, I also think I don’t have to do anything to fix it. So, I cast blame and hope things change. If I think it’s my fault, I also think I must do everything to fix it or nothing will change. I take action continuously and relentlessly and change what needs to change. When we take responsibility, we take control!
