High impact leaders intentionally grow and develop themselves into leaders people will naturally want to follow. If you haven’t earned the respect of your team, be prepared for a lot of frustration. If you have a position of authority over an entire facility or a group of people within a facility, you will lead more effectively with influence than you will with position. If you can set aside your position or formal authority and lead with moral authority, you will have leverage those without a position can’t tap into because they don’t have a position to set aside. When those reporting to you know you can rule with an iron fist but choose not to, you will gain additional influence and respect. When those reporting to you feel threatened by your power and position, you will lose influence and respect. Tony Curl said it best, "When you compromise who you are, you compromise who you attract." ? Low impact leaders, with or without a position, demand respect but never get it. High impact leaders, with or without a position, earn respect and have no need to demand it. Don’t be like the low impact, positional "boss" in the following short story I came across years ago. One day a man goes to a pet shop to buy a parrot. The assistant takes the man to the parrot section and asks the man to choose one. The man asks, "How much is the yellow one?" The assistant says, "$2,000." The man is shocked and asks the assistant why it’s so expensive. The assistant explains, "This parrot is very, very special. He knows typewriting and can type really fast." "What about the green one?" the man asks. The assistant says, "He costs $5,000 because he knows typewriting, can answer incoming phone calls, and take notes." "What about the red one?" the man asks. The assistant says, "That one is $10,000." The man says, "What does HE do?" The assistant says, "I don’t know, but the other two call him boss." It may be hard for some to believe, but this is the way it is with many leaders in the real world too. Unfortunately, many leaders do not interact with their teams very much, if at all. They’re afraid they may somehow become responsible if they get too close. In these cases, the team doesn’t know what the "boss" does, and the "boss" doesn’t know what the team is doing. High impact leaders get to know their team and build strong relationships with them. Excerpt above is from "10 Values of High Impact Leaders" by Mack Story, Blue-Collar Leadership? DO IT BETTER THAN EXPECTED: Doing it better than expected increases your influence; doing it worse than expected decreases your influence. As George Washington Carver stated, “When you do the common things in life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.” ? When you pay attention to the details and go above and beyond expectations, people pay attention to you. The pride you take in your work shows. It builds trust and influence because you are saying through your actions, “What I’m doing matters to me.” You don't do it better than expected because of what you’re being paid. You do it better than expected simply because YOU are doing it. Doing things better than expected also shouldn't be tied to how you’re treated. Value driven people do it better than expected because they value doing a better job than expected. They understand they are working for themselves. It’s about improving their reputation and growing their influence. Value driven people understand this principle. They know the quality of their work reflects the quality of their character. And for them, character always counts. If you want to do it better than expected on the front lines, do two things: 1) Focus on developing yourself 2) Focus on improving the processes where you work. Basically, YOU make yourself better, and YOU make your job better. I’ve just described the perfect, high impact team player. When it comes to responsibility, high impact leaders look in the mirror and accept responsibility. Managers look out the window and transfer responsibility. When things go wrong, high impact leaders look in the mirror and take the blame. Managers look out the window and transfer the blame. If a high impact leader’s team is not performing as well as it should be, the leader looks in the mirror asking: - How can I help? - What am I not doing that I should be doing? - What can I do better? - What do I need to know that I don’t know? If a manager’s team is not performing as well as it should be, the manager looks out the window saying: - They aren’t working hard enough. - They don’t do what I tell them to do. - They don’t listen. - They don’t work together as a team. What about when things are going well? Who gets the credit for the success? High impact leaders look through the window and give credit to others. Managers look in the mirror and take the credit. Be a leader worth following…
Climb The Ladder of Influence? and Become the Leader You are Destined to Be.? | Author of 15 Books | Keynote Speaker | TEDx Speaker | Leadership Trainer | Survivor Advocate
For a long time, early in my career, I thought being the boss was the goal. I didn't realize there was even a difference between being the "boss" and being the "leader." Fortunately, I grew up! Anyone can be a boss. All you need is a title or a position. But, not everyone will choose to be a leader. Being the leader means you need moral influence, not just authority, and your influence is determined by WHO YOU ARE. To lead at a high level, you must develop who you are - that will in turn change what you do, how you do it, when you do it, and why you do it. Will you choose to lead?
