When it comes to influencing their team, leaders with moral authority always have the advantage. Why? Because leaders who lead with moral authority have followers who WANT TO follow them while leaders who lead with formal authority have workers who HAVE TO follow them. Research has shown people who WANT TO follow their leader are 40% more productive than those who HAVE TO follow their leader. I believe it’s much higher based on my 35+ years of experience working with leaders and their teams in the workplace. Moral authority leaders know this is true. Formal authority leaders don't have a clue. Moral authority can only be earned. Formal authority must simply be accepted when it is offered. Moral authority, whether you have a position of formal authority or not, is based on who you are...your character. Formal authority requires a position and is based on what you are...your position, title, or rank. High impact leaders intentionally move beyond the old, outdated methods of traditional management and supervision toward high impact leadership. Developing the character of the workforce is a leadership activity that few "leaders" are engaged in. Most "leaders" are too insecure to attempt it or simply don't value aligning themselves or their team with character-based leadership principles. Developing the character of those in formal leadership positions is a leadership activity that few "leaders" are engaged in. Most "leaders" are too insecure to attempt it or simply don't value aligning themselves or their team with character-based leadership principles. Have you ever noticed people are most often hired for what they know (competency) but fired for who they are (character)? Most leaders deal with character related, people problems all day every day. Yet, seldom choose to develop the character of those on their team. Where's the problem? With the people or with the leader? Both! However, the leader is ultimately responsible for the development of themselves and the individuals on their team. High impact leaders look in the mirror at themselves and take responsibility for developing the character of those on their teams. They also have the integrity to model what they're teaching. Low impact leaders look out the window at their team and cast the blame at them for having poor character. These leaders fail to realize they attract who they are, and the team is always exactly where their leader has led them to be. Leadership activity, such as character development, is seldom required in an organization. Therefore, it is seldom embraced by the "leaders" inside the organization. These same "leaders" are likely to be highly engaged in management activities related to managing the business and developing the competency of those who are doing the work. Why? Because management activities are always required inside organizations. Ria and Mack Story, Blue-Collar Leadership? received this great text after speaking for the SOUTHWARK METAL MFG. CO. leadership team last week in Philadelphia, PA: “The team loved the presentation and many said the interplay with you and Ria was great. If I can summarize the team after in two words, it’d be educated and motivated, which to me, are probably the best two that we can ask for. I will say, in all the trainings and things I’ve been a part of, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen so much usage of terms, quips, and sayings as I did today after you guys left. Seemed like everyone that spoke up the rest of the day, at some point, referred to their notes and related to a principle or quote from y’all’s session. Looking forward to staying in touch as we build out our training plans and resources and incorporate your material and book studies in them. Thank you to you and Ria and safe travels. Be in touch soon.” Brent Ford, HR Director ************************* Thoughts from Mack… We enjoyed meeting the owner, the top leaders from HQ, and the 7 plant mangers and their HR managers from across the USA. These leaders know what we know: You don’t have to be sick to get better! I believe they are about to begin helping their entire Southwark team climb to the next level and beyond…personally and professionally, as individuals, and as a team. High performance teams aren’t built accidentally. They’re built intentionally! We consider it a privilge to play a small role in their BIG picture. If you’re already in the manufacturing industry or want to be, check out Southwark. Are you working in a toxic culture? The foundation of culture is the top leader’s values. If the culture is toxic, the top leader’s values created the toxic culture OR allowed it to happen. If they didn’t like it, they would change it by improving or removing the toxic people within the organization. They always have this option. If they’re ok with it, it’s not going to change. However, if someone is working in a toxic culture, they are responsible for improving their own situation by removing themselves from the organization. I’m often asked, “Why do some leaders treat their team members so poorly?” It’s simple, because those team members choose to show up and continue working for those toxic leaders. If someone finds themselves in a toxic culture and feel they have no choice but to keep working there, that very thought is THE problem. If we feel we don’t have a choice, it’s our fault…not our leader’s fault. We must intentionally develop ourselves and methodically make choices that will move us in the right direction. The good news is that we come fully loaded with an unlimited supply of choices (good and bad). Blaming others is a choice. Taking responsibility is a choice. Blame is also the most popular excuse. In other words, my circumstances are someone else’s fault. If I think it’s someone else’s fault, I also think I don’t have to do anything to fix it. So, I cast blame and hope things change. If I think it’s my fault, I also think I must do everything to fix it or nothing will change. I take action continuously and relentlessly and change what needs to change. When we take responsibility, we take control!
