Here’s a breakdown of how this specific setup works and why it's effective: Online Orders vs. Phone Orders:?In this case, the florist shop in New York relies heavily on AdWords, with more than 50% of their business coming from it. The AdWords tracking system is set up to count completed transactions that reach the "Thank You" page, which shows an online order has been completed. In the first 10 days of October, the system recorded 38 online orders. However, this doesn’t account for phone orders that are also driven by the ads. Tracking Phone Orders:?The florist uses a conservative estimate where they assume a 1:1 ratio—meaning for every online order, they believe at least one additional order is made via phone. In reality, phone orders might be even higher. They point out that 68 people clicked the phone number directly from the ad, which means there’s additional traffic that isn’t captured if those people decided to call instead of ordering online. Unaccounted Clicks:?The report shows that there were 336 clicks, yet only 38 online orders. This raises a question: What happened to the rest of those clicks? This is where the florist believes that many customers clicked but decided to call the store instead, which isn’t always tracked unless specific phone tracking is in place. Importance of Phone Tracking:?The florist emphasizes the importance of phone tracking, especially in a business like theirs where many customers prefer to call and order over the phone. The florist has even developed phone tracking software to better capture these conversions, as turning off AdWords results in a noticeable drop in overall business, both online and by phone. Why 1:1 is Conservative:?The florist believes that the 1:1 ratio is actually a conservative way to look at the impact of AdWords. Based on their experience, there could be three to four phone orders for every online order, especially since many customers may start online but finish the transaction by calling the shop. By using AdWords effectively and tracking both online and phone orders, the florist can maximize their advertising efforts and gain a clearer understanding of where their sales are coming from. Ignoring phone orders or underestimating their volume could mean missing out on a big part of the business AdWords is driving.
