Ending health disparities. One drop at a time.

关于我们

The water & HIV crises are inextricably linked. And Africa is impacted by both – half of the world's population that lacks safe water & 68% of the global population living with HIV. Historically, clean water with proper sanitation & hygiene (WASH) was the only way to slow disease progression. So the interconnectedness of WASH & HIV/AIDS was life or death. Many locally-led African nonprofits address both challenges – SDGs 3 & 6 at once. But the global development sector still silos these global health crises making it harder for community-driven organizations to strengthen their reach and effectiveness. Blood:Water is an international nonprofit that partners with African community-driven and -led organizations to end water & HIV/AIDS health disparities through organizational strengthening and financial support.

??This anniversary is a celebration of our partners! We are excited to have been doing this work for 20 years - it is an accomplishment worth celebrating. But while we are honored to play a meaningful role in providing safe water and sanitation and providing HIV care, support and prevention across Africa, we are not the true agents of change. Our African partners are the organizations doing face-to-face work with people in their communities, equipping them to thrive. This 20th anniversary is not just a celebration of Blood:Water. It’s a celebration of our partners and the life-changing work they have done (and continue to do). ??Watch this video to see decades of change and generations of impact unfold?? https://lnkd.in/eajgMPm3

Global Health Leader. Equitable Philanthropy Practitioner. Systems Change Community Builder. HIV/AIDS Fighter. #EndAIDS

What a beautiful conversation with these incredible leaders Bondiwe Ndondo, Andy Bryant and Nasra Ismail. People power is at the heart of the demand for philanthropic power shifts. My favorite take aways from this vibrant and no-nonsense closing plenary of the #APF2024 in Marrakech : ???? Decolonizing development is a movement for liberation. Let us never lose sight of this. ????Trust is the fruit of relationship and tenure. ????We can improve the accessibility of funding and still not address power differentials. It’s the “HOW” of partnership that does that. ????There is a need to reframe our lens of philanthropy to include the collective giving power of people. Individual smaller-scale giving when pooled becomes large scale philanthropic intent. #APF24 Blood:Water Segal Family Foundation Alight #HlinganisaCommunityFund African Philanthropy Forum East Africa Philanthropy Network-EAPN

The conversations from the plenary- “People Power: Catalyzing Transformation through Trust-based Philanthropy and Civic Engagement” explored how civic engagement, when paired with trust-based giving, fosters accountability, transparency, and resilience, creating an environment where people feel valued and empowered to initiate change. The panel was moderated by Nasra Ismail and had speakers including Andy Bryant, Nadia Kist and Bongiwe Ndondo. #APF2024 #APF24

“Change doesn’t take time, it happens in an instant… right when you make a decision. It’s getting ready to change that takes time.” — Tony Robbins The wonderful thing about my role or better still Blood:Water is how we walk with our partners as they continuously strengthen their systems, policies, people and practices ( This is what we call Organizational Strengthening; have a look at the picture attached) and then during one routine activity you finally see it...... STRENGTHENED SKILL ?????????? This happened today as I read through a partner's report and how beautifully reflective it was. The clarity in what change the project is achieving both in individuals and communal was unmatched. The cherry on top.....it can be evidenced!!!!!!! It's these little moments that reaffirm to me that our model works!!!! Trust based and highly relational philanthropy paired with funding for organizations to lead their own growth and development is the only way to go. It takes time but they when they get there.....They THRIVE?? #partnerships #Organizationalstrengthening

Connection. Being known, and knowing others (at least a bit!). At a conference? It’s a privilege to be back at Opportunity Collaboration 2024, this time in Ixtapa, Mexico. This “un-conference” is such a refreshing mix of opportunities for connections, gathering funders and practitioners together, and aiming more toward conversation and learning instead of pressures that come with conferences. It’s not perfect but it is a breath of fresh air. And it’s in a beautiful setting that reinforces relaxation and refreshment. The extra-special treat is to meet with 2 of our Blood:Water partner leaders who traveled from Kenya to be here! It is a glimpse into the web of relationships that show we’re stronger together — there’s nothing like a community of funders and nonprofits collaborating together. #oc2024 #gainingtrust #celebratinggains #ixtapa #ocimpact

???It's Global Handwashing Day!????? Since 2004 we have consistently supported under-resourced, community-driven organizations with long-term and intentional organizational strengthening and flexible financial support. Through our partners’ work, nearly 1 million people now have access to safe water and more than 1.15 million people have been trained in proper sanitation and hygiene practices!

Thank you to Paul Traina and Jeny Wegbreit from the Shockwave Foundation for visiting us in Nairobi last week! We enjoyed sharing partnership updates and discussing the partner experience accessing and utilizing Blood:Water’s unique Organizational Strengthening model. Paired with our grants and offered exclusively to African-led and community-driven organizations, our Organizational Strengthening model invests additional funding and resources into partner organizations holistically across systems, people, policies, and practices. We also had the opportunity to join Ephy Mbali, Executive Director of CABDA, and Jane Wathome, Executive Director of Beacon of Hope Africa, at Olesirikan Primary School. The school visit allowed us to see the transformative work that has been done to expand access to safe water, hygiene and comprehensive health education. Through its partnership with Beacon of Hope, the school experienced a ripple effect of amplified impact improving the school's admission demands, attendance rates and diversification of learning opportunities and infrastructure. We are grateful to Shockwave Foundation for their philosophy of investing in sustainable, replicable solutions led by local leaders.
