We welcome the Council of the European Union's final adoption of the?Substances of Human Origin (SoHO) Regulation which aims to strengthen the safety and quality of SoHOs intended for human application. These new measures will enhance the protection and safety of citizens who donate blood, tissues, or cells, and those treated with these vital substances. The Blood Transfusion Association is very happy to see a flexible, innovation-friendly result in the SoHO Regulation. This progressive legislation is a step towards securing the long-term supply of these essential substances and ensuring the health and safety of both donors and patients across Europe. Exciting news today! ?? The European Parliament has voted on the Substance of Human Origin (SoHO) Regulation. The Blood Transfusion Association (BTA) welcomes this significant achievement in enhancing the safety measures for blood and blood components to ensure that the highest standards are met and maintained across Europe! We particularly applaud the following points: Patient Safety & Innovation: The Regulation prioritises patient safety while promoting the integration of innovative blood products and processes, benefiting patients, donors, and healthcare workers alike. Incorporating processing technologies in the Regulation will help address challenges in ensuring equality in blood donations, safeguarding the blood supply and protecting public health.? Climate Change & Pandemic Preparedness: Taking a proactive stance, the Regulation addresses climate change impacts and strengthens pandemic preparedness to ensure a resilient blood supply. Worker Health & Safety: Personnel handling SoHO’s may be exposed to infectious diseases or other hazardous substances, and appropriate safety precautions must be implemented to safeguard their health. Aligned with existing directives, the Regulation ensures the health and safety of workers dealing with SoHOs.
