Modularity and the ability to source different modular components such as Builder Vault (MPC wallet security) and APIs to build your own wallet emerged as a key takeaway from today’s Build vs. Buy: The Institutional Wallet Dilemma roundtable. Shared insights from Rakuten, Google, Blockdaemon and Narval suggest many institutions will start with a more monolithic, off-the-shelf wallet approach for rapid time to market, but then transition to their own in-house developed wallet to allow them to source multiple suppliers for key components to improve redundancy, feature coverage, and pricing leverage. It will be important to find the balance of having multiple suppliers for redundancy across modules, while maintaining as few supplier relationships as possible to balance both optionality and operational efficiency.
