The 2024 Black Joy AI Summit is a pioneering initiative where Black leaders, technologists, cultural artists, and scholars converged in Washington, DC for two days at Union Temple DC, to reimagine the future of artificial intelligence through the lens of Black Joy. I remember talking with Dr. Fallon W. Wilson [founder of #BlackTechFutures Research Institute ] in Austin, Texas, at SXSW about nine years ago, discussing her vision of the intersection of faith, culture, and technology, and convening tech summits at historically Black institutions. Specially traditional Black churches which are typically under-resourced and underutilized anchors in the Black community. It begs the question: 'What is a church?' Is it a community hub? Is it a building, a place of worship, a technology hub, or an empowerment center? As a man of faith and a technologist, I thought I understood what she was envisioning, but after participating in the inaugural Black Joy Summit—where there were technologists, a choir singing, people building foundational large language models (LLMs), and leaders in government—I was completely inspired to lean into the work we are already doing at Rebrand Cities , but with greater intention. I’ve never experienced the intersection of these areas like I did this past weekend in DC. Her work around digital equity is amazing, and I can’t wait to see what’s next. Combining Congressional Black Caucus and BlackTechFutures Research Institute events in Washington, DC was beyond positive and impactful for Latimer. We continue to build out the functionality of our core application, but as importantly, we continue to build the community around our efforts to promote inclusivity in AI and within the data that informs AI. Ok, so NOW, it's time for me to talk about the #BlackJoyAISummit!! Y'all. Fallon W. and the #BlackTechFutures Research Institute team (Jurnell Cockhren, michaela henley, Alexandria Dirl, and more - please tag them!) did an AMAZING JOB! From the historic venue, to the cultural performances, the lightning talks and workshops, the hotel, shuttle service, awards dinner, everything was so well thought out and intentional. They had VISUALS AND MUSIC, y'all!! It felt like I was living in the Lemonade album. I had a wonderful time connecting with Black innovators, builders, policy makers, writers, etc. all connected through their work to advance digital equity. This summer, I was a Fellow in the #BTF Public Interest Technology Summer Research Institute, and the information I learned has already been so valuable. I appreciate Fallon W. for including me in this program, and thank you for honoring me with an award! Now I'm looking forward to #NationalBlackAiDay, which I learned about at this summit, and which is FREE, and VIRTUAL! So yall should register if you're interested.
