Airlines, Air Tags and lost bags…oh my In 2023, airlines lost close to 3 million bags, and that is just in the U.S.?For as long as I can recall, we have been subjected to the scan-based tracking system, which captures where and when the bag was last scanned, or in other words, where and when the bag was last seen.?It’s an important distinction, where the bag last was, versus where the bag is.?Real-time bag location has been the Holy Grail of baggage management and perhaps we are getting closer, but are we going about location tracking the right way, and with the right technology? Over the last few weeks, most of us have consumed a story or sound bite about airline customers’ baggage tracking and Apple Air Tags.?While certainly a step in the right direction, we would classify it as a baby step, the first of many, on a long journey, should airlines remain committed to solving the issue for everyone, once and for all. “For everyone”, that is the thing, right??If you are not an Apple user and Air Tag owner, then this solution is not available to you.?We estimate that’s over 50% of flyers would be unable to participate in this baggage tracking program.?? Let’s unpack this idea of flyers’ role, because the success of the program relies entirely on flyer participation.?First, the Air Tags must be purchased ($25 to $30 per).?Next, the flyer needs to remember to put the Air Tag inside their bag(s).?When the bag is lost, it’s the flyer who must enable and allow location sharing and then provide this permission to the airlines’ customer service departments.??This is as close to DIY customer service as it gets.?And yet, without significant efforts from the flyers, even Apple Air Tag owners will be subject to traditional bag tracking and outcomes. We suggest there is a better way.?A way that is less expensive, available to all flyers and puts the burden on the technology, not the flyers, nor the airline.?Beyond those benefits, this "better way” offers a customer service edge, and for the first time, a real time and holistic view of bag locations.?This is a real step change in managing flyer satisfaction. This “better way” uses inexpensive but rugged beacons/tags, a new network topology called BLE Mesh. Currently we are spinning up pilots for different applications like gate-checked baggage, rewards member benefits, and of course methods for making this available for all flyers and airlines.
