More study tour highlights from our Oregon MBA student’s visit to NYC included a visit to Cornell University to meet with Michael Charles, a professor in biological and environmental engineering at Cornell University. Charles will also be a featured speaker at our April 12-13, 2024, Summit for Sustainable Organizations conference at the University of Oregon. He shared insights and research, with students from his work developing computational sustainability frameworks that include dynamic ecological models. As a Diné (Navajo) scholar, he’s also dedicated to forming mutually respectful partnerships with Indigenous communities. ? MBA students also toured BLDGWORKS, a pioneering startup in the architecture and construction sector whose founder Erik Churchill, AIA is an Oregon MBA and UO Masters in Architecture alum! Churchill, along with Michael Kwilos (another UO Masters in Architecture alum), Cliff Champion, and Tim Devlin, highlighted the ways BLDGWORKs is revolutionizing construction, including through specializing in the mass timber segment. Mass timber involves using laminated wood for key structural elements like beams, walls, and floors to replace large amounts of steel and concrete—the largest contributors to carbon emissions in building construction. BLDGWORKS also stands out from traditional architecture and construction companies with its unique structure. They rely on external suppliers for their custom mass timber components but integrate all other construction phases in-house. Their approach includes in-house design and detailed building plans that lay out the assembly of prefabricated and modular components on site. Next, students were off to Valutus, where founder Daniel Aronson shared highlights from his upcoming new book, The?Value of Values?(MIT Press, February 2024) which details how organizations consistently struggle to identify and measure the ROI of sustainability initiatives in key business dimensions. Aronson also shared how Valutus uses causal experimental data and industry-accepted formulas to solidify the business case for investing in environmental and social sustainability initiatives.
