Through our garden education, we love it when students are excited to harvest food. When working with students, it is important to emphasize why we must thoroughly clean and inspect the harvest before we consume it. Here’s a brief video to show what a person could also eat if they pick a berry and immediately consume it.

Fall 2023, my Silenced Stories Book Club, co-facilitated with Natalie Pipkin (Black Worldschoolers Mobile Bookstore), read The Parable of the Sower by Science Fiction Queen Octavia E. Butler. The first entry of main character Lauren Oya Olamina’s journal takes place on today, Saturday, July 20, 2024. It begins as follows: All that you touch You Change. All that you Change Changes you. The only lasting truth is Change. God Is Change. EARTHSEED: THE BOOKS OF THE LIVING As the story unfolds, these words are revisited several times. There is so much in this book that aligns with current events. There was never a better time to read this book. Also, LeVar Burton has encouraged people to read this book on his social media, and he wrote a new forward for the book. My copy doesn’t have his forward so I will need to get an updated copy. You might ignore me, but how can you ignore LeVar Burton?!?! Additionally, my 2024 Silenced Stories Book Club will read Butler’s second book Parable of the Talents this fall.
