I started using this idea with my leadership teams at both businesses & it has brought immediate wins. 2 super simple assumptions: ?? People are happiest, most engaged, and contributing at their top level when they spend most of their time doing things they’re best at and that give them energy. ?? Your organization will be performing at its highest level when the majority of its people fit the first assumption. So here is a tool to help move you in the right direction. 3 easy steps: 1?? On a piece of paper, write down all your tasks. Everything you spend your time doing in your role. 2?? Map each task in the chart below. The y-axis is for the amount of energy it gives or takes. The x-axis is for how critical it is that you specifically do the task. If you do it better than most people it goes to the right, if most people do it better for you it goes to the left. 3?? Once all of your tasks are mapped, look for opportunities to offload (delegate, trade, hire, contract, lead up, quit doing) the tasks that aren’t in the top right quadrant (gives energy + you do best). Start with tasks in the bottom left (you’re bad at and it’s killing you). Offload 1 task at a time. If you do this in conversation with your team, you’ll find that things you’re bad at someone else might be the best. You’ll find that things that suck the energy out of someone else might fuel your soul. The end goal: the majority of your time is spent doing things in the top right. A little bit of time in the top left and bottom right. Little or no tasks in the bottom left. This week at Groundhouse: I’m going to stop doing event coordinating in order to do more strategic planning. This week at Blazer Strategies: I’m going to do less proposal and contract writing and more business development meetings. I’m happier & both businesses are better off. Being able to explain your business/nonprofit and what you do isn’t enough. You have to understand who your target audience is. Then you have to be able to explain in words and pictures that resonate with your target audience at a timely place in their decision-making process. Early on, we talked about “idea acceleration” as our value proposition at Blazer Strategies. It made sense to us. Our target audience understood what it meant in conversation, but it wasn’t the way they framed their own predicament. So, it didn’t click. We realized that our ideal customers usually come to us when they’re feeling frustrated. There is something (time, capacity, expertise, etc) getting in the way of them achieving next goal. They either aren’t sure how to overcome the problem or they don’t have the capacity to do so. “Accelerating their idea” was like a square peg in a round hole. What our ideal customers needed was clear direction and the capacity to accomplish their goals with speed. So now, we frame our work as “bringing velocity to your organization’s growth.” Velocy = speed + direction. When we bring this up with prospective clients, we often find that they adopt the language in the conversation too. It puts words to their feelings and experiences. It just clicks.
